I was told by a IT contact that there are many QA/ Testing imparting institutes in USA (Run by Desi's) who will give free training and jobs in testing. He further told me that they advertise in Sulekha and that even he himself went once to NJ to be trained but then that he left it as he did not like testing (he is a sucessful software engr.) He told me that wages that you get will be around $ 45 an hour.
and so I searched Sulekha.com and found many advt's offering training for free. I also found 2 or 3 institutes offering free training and assured placment with free accomodation during training as follows ;
Influx Inc offer free training in QA in Chicago, weekday batches as well as weekend batches. Free H1B sponsorship and GC for qualified employees. Online Training / In-Class training is available. Free accommodation.
Area of Interest: QAType: Placement,TrainingName: Asha | Pina | Raj

Since CD has many IT people from USa who have come to this great country due to H1 B visa restriction, I humbly request some feedback from those people.
In the mean time , I have also written to these people, and will update Cd regarding the result.

Peace by TK

Like the earlier poster said, they do offer free training or sometimes charge nominal 1000$. But they expect you to join them on H1B. (Probably they will take care of that first). Also, like the other poster said, training will be mediocre to say the least. They will have some one working in the field give some training over the weekend typically or sometimes over internet in the evenings. They will probably give you some books and some cracked software and expect you to pick up.

Some agencies provide free accommodation and food too until you find a project. That means - they usually have 4 or 5 bedroom house and they put 10 to 12 people in there and take you to walmart over weekend and pay for your groceries.

If you are coming to USA on H1B visa, you HAVE to get paid all the time by the employer as per the minimum wage for that particular position in that area. These institutes quote that wage amount (55k to 65k per year) in your H1B application. But if you don't have a project, they will not pay you anything. Zilch. Nada. The moment your paycheck does not run for a month, you are technically out of status. It can affect your entry to US in future or your Green Card.

Also, like the earlier poster said, these institutes were making hay until 2008 first half. Right now, I know so many people in SAP Finance with real experience who are struggling for months to find a project. Same case with other technologies too.

rightly said coolguy...but things might be slightly different for Canadian Citizens as compared to someone going on H1B visa...the citizens come under TN visa...i contacted couple of institutes who were eager to train me based on my Canadian Citizenship because there would be hardly any work for them...but still I will think twice before joining these instituted and shedding 1000$....do you know any institute who dont take money upfront..?

according to me the best way to get training is to get employed with a company and then go from there...

I don't know any companies off my head. The best place to start with is Sulekha and look for cities along the border. So what is different with TN? They don't have to be paid minimum standard wages for that particular job title?

well if you look at sulekha..you will mostly find these desi training institutes posing as companies as well...according to them, they r not instituted but companies with whom you will be working after your training gets completed as they get you projects from clients...but you get paid by these desi companies...i have heard that ppl have to travel east-west on projects..not for someone who hates to travel with all the belongings every 6-8 months..perhaps someone from CD who have taken the training would be able to give us more detail...for TN visa you get for 3 yrs and you don't have to go to consulate or take any appointments..you just get it on the border...i am not sure about the minimum standard wages for a particular title..again i request some CD to shed more info into it

Hey guys,
Remember something, no one does it for free & there is no such thing as free in this world. if you heard of something free then they are expecting something in return in other ways. Dont get attracted to these kind of ads. Me being in uSA last 9 years i know how these things works out here. Most of them already said above the pros & cons of these institutes & i dont want to repeat. However the current market situation is very Bleak & i personally urge everyone to think 10 times before you take any decision where it involves your time & money. Last couple of years H1B visa's used to run out in a day ( yes in a day ) , this particular year there are still H1 B visa's available even though it was opened in April.it does not matter if you are H1B, TN or US Citizen, there are thousands of people out here who are without Jobs & i don't see any end to layoff's in majority of the companies. The people who are trying to train you in QA/testing may be jobless & this is one way of earning. My opinion is even if you get trained in QA/ Java or whatever the probability of getting Job is very very negligable. So whatever you have learned you will forget by the time you get your job. If you have a job sit tight & hold onto your plans untill market gets back. Just my 2 cents...

Thanks,
Sfodesi

hello sfodesi...

you advice is very apt and very eyes opener who think they can earn like 100-150$/hr by doing SAP from these training institutes...as ur in USA you rightly said that these might be run by individuals who r themselves laid off and running these courses to earn money...can you tell me which field you belong..?

and thanks very much for your advice and i hope the creator of the post might learn something from your comments...

That's right. They are actually companies who are giving ads for training. Because training is a way for them to attract you into their company. Like I said, training sometimes will be over web meeting. Even if it is in person training, big deal.. they just have a white board and a conference room and few practice computers.

And yes, they don't have any work going on in their company. They are just body shops. They try to market you to clients for different projects and you have to travel where ever the client is in US. Some companies pay you 500 to 1000$ for relocation at the beginning of each project. But many companies do not pay anything. They bill clients, take some percentage commission 25 to 30% per hour from what client pays and give you the remaining. There may be multiple layers of such agencies in the placement process. The client may be paying 80$/hr and the candidate may finally get 30$/hr because of the different layers in between taking their commissions.
