Generally speaking, it is better to carry less cash (may be 2 to 3K).

I also feel that, as far as possible, try to bring cash in CAD. When you exchange USD to CAD (here in Canada) you may loose because of exchange rates etc. This is assuming that the exchange rate is steady. Don't exchange money in airport.

Just my two cents.

Good luck.

I don't think they charge any commission here to encash your TC s ... You get peace of mind and easy encashment availability plus security against losing ...

There s no harm in getting all the currency entered on your Passport ..Generally money changers in India insist upon this if the amount is large.

you said CAD 5000/- USD 5000/- and travellers cheque 10000/- totalling to 20000/- okay to survive for 6 months in canada without job. Mind you, get mentally prepared to be jobless till recession is over. (If you get job you are lucky). Just for your calcualtion : rent $800-1000 pm, house expenses initial 2-3 months it will be high,since you have to puchase every little small things like mustard,oil etc and tins and every small things so say 1000 $ every months for 2-3 months and afterwards 500-600 pm. travelling 100$ pm for each person,driving licence say 600-800 for classes. ($25 each class on road) $80-$160 G1 (test fees) $80 for road test. approx 1000$ driving licence. Mind you, till you get job, you can't afford car because of high Insurance ($250 pm)+gas ($250 pm) and loan of car ($300 pm) totalling to Usd 800/- pm. Till 3 months no medical card so, if you fall sick $30 for general physician + separate for medicine.

expenses for six months.

rent 1000 X 6 6000
house exps 1000X3 3000
600 X 3 1800
public transport 200X 6 1200

doctor/misc 500
driving licence 1000
cerification 500
--------

total 14000
=====

rest for your return ticket if you decide to go since you are unable to get job.

sorry to be so ruthless but this is the actual picture of canada.

anyways welcome to canada and have a nice stay in canada.
