Isaignani Illaiyaraja has been awarded the Padma Bhushan award. It is the third highest award in India after Bharat Ratna and Padma Vibushan.
Illaiyaraja has been the King of South Indian Film music since mid 1970's he has scored over 800 movies and most of his songs have been hits then and are loved 25 years later.
Eg: Songs of Cheeni Kum were made in tamil in mid 1980 and then later made in Hindi 2009 and were super hit.
His re-recording(background score) in the movie PAA was simply OUTSTANDING.
The issue is not whether Illaiyaraja has been awarded or not but the way they have awarded A.R.Rahman also the same award along with him. A.R.Rahman is a superstar and also a very talented musician with a global reach and also has won the golden globe and the Oscars.
BUT clamping both the guys into the same category in the very same year rubs Illaiyaraja's achievements.
They could have awarded ARR the very same award next year. He is hardly 43 yrs of age and he has many more years to go. Why did they rush?.
Is there politics involved in this particular award and that too from the Kichdi Party of India?.
As our former PM PV Narasimha Rao used to say you could make a line smaller by drawing a bigger line next to it, has the GOI done the same to Illaiyaraja?.
Whatever it may I consider this as an insult to Illaiyaraja's accomplishment till to date.

Well, remember an award was also given to the doctor who operated on ABV's knee. These awards over a period of time, unfortunately, have lost value.
Read one comment by Vir Singhvi about who will likely get the award next year.

The fact that they awarded Padma Bhushan to Aamir Khan this year, as well as Padma Shri to Akshay Kumar, Udit Narayan, Kumar Sanu and Aishwarya last year, makes the mockery of these awards

This means that in Bollywood, you need to be popular to win these awards, not necessarily talented.
