This might be something surprising but take a back seat and make or confirm this observation.
We tend to retain the music we grew up in our teenage years.
My grand dad who was born in 1903 and he never could appreciate film music as there was no recorded music in 1910 - 1920.
My father born in 1930 who grew up with K.L.Saigal did not appreciate Kishore Kumar or Rafi.
I born a few decades grew up with RD, Kishore, Rafi and Illaiyaraja.
My children Do not understand even ARR but love Korean, Lady Gaga and do not appreciate Indian film music.
They say that all Indian songs sound the same.
This is irrespective of whether it was 1930, 1970, 1990 or today.
They always try to identify the original English track where the Indian film song today has copied from.
Hence this taste is all relative.
I love Kishore Kumar and RD but cannot stand Lakshmikant or Kumar Sanu.
But music which was a like speciality restaurant has become a fast food joint.
Why was ARR so popular because he made jingles and he knew that he has to catch you attention with in the first 5 seconds of the song intro, while a song was for 8 to 10 minutes in olden days.
We need to adapt if not our children and grandchildren will think that we are not cool.
Chillax !.
