There seems to be concerted effort by some to belittle the senior SD's contribution. Channels like Times Now or CNN IBN always seem to be play up the junior's songs and contribution and mention his father only in passing reference. Generally, for people of the era S.D. Burman's music for more pleasing to the ears and his son's though foot tapping was many times jarring. During the latter' life time, he was sometimes even mentioned about lifting songs from the Western movies.

In my mind, at least, there is no comparison.
There is no doubt they were both great in their own regard, but SD represents the Golden Era and his music reflects the richness, classical ethos, romanticism and sensitivity of his era, mostly missing in RD's compositions.
The other thing missing during RD's era were the great poets and lyricists of SD's era, notably Sahir and Majrooh, although Majrooh did write for some of RD's early movies.
I also don't think RD had quite the same versatility and range of emotions that SD's compositions had.
On one end of the range are compositions from Pyaasa and on the other are Baazi, House No. 44, etc.
I don't think RD (or anyone else) could have done Tum na jaane his jahan mein khoo gaye (Saaza) or Jaane woh kaise log thay jinke (Pyaasa) or Mera sundar sapna beet gaya, just to quote a couple of random examples.
SD's music also had the influence of folk and rustic music from Bengal and Assam, again totally missing from the metallic cacophony of RD.
It is ironic that SD could speak/understand so little Hindi compared to RD, let alone deep Urdu, yet he managed to work with and compose the writings of Urdu poets like Sahir.
I don't think he understood a word of tang aa chuke hain kashmakash-a-zindagi se hum yet the compositions are pure, golden brilliance.

Well, I'm not partcularly fussy about so-called originality among musicians, unless it is just plain shameless plagiarism like Bappi Lahiri and Annu Malik style.
I think RD Burman was several degrees more talented and skilled than those clowns.
It would be hard to find true originality in music...everything is influenced or inspired for something or the other.
The music of man goes back thousands of years.
Even SD Burman's compositions were heavily influenced by native Bengali and Assamese music like Nazrul geet, Baol geet and the folk music of the far eastern mountains.
In Salil Choudhary's compositions, you can find elements of Slavic/Hungarian music...remember dil tarap tarap ke keh raha hai from Madhumati (Dilip Kumar and Vajayantimala)?
That is a note by note copy of a Hungarian folk song.
Dharti kahe pukar ke was the Soviet red army's marching tune (in subdued notes).
So it is hard to brand originality.
But yes, in this case, the Mehbooba song from Sholay is clearly a direct copy of this

Although it's probably a good practice to acknowledge it, that concept does not exist in India.
