A friend of mine is a Doctor who is moving to Saudi Arabia for family reasons.
Over the years, the family has piled up a lot valuble house hold and are reluctant to sell them.

Some folks in the past moved to middle east from Canada. Do you have any refernce for a good shipping company.

They are not moving their cars but sell them.

Timeframe for move is June.

Do they have to pay any duties , taxes etc when the stuff comes into Saudi ? For electronics will the plugs, voltage, current etc be different ? Will the furniture etc from here fit or look good in their Saudi house ? How much is the transportation cost ?

Considering all these factors, it might be better to get rid of things over here ..more practical & maybe even cost effective in the long run.

Just try moving from one apartment or one house in say Toronto , to another house or apartment in Toronto. The movers are a nightmare. They break stuff , steal stuff , hold your stuff hostage ..the price they quote for the move is often fake ..lot of hidden charges pop up & you end up paying way more !

Moving stuff from one country to another is worse.

Get rid of stuff for even 50 % of your original price or even donate some to charity & you will be better off :) .

I have donated lots especially bulky items like furniture, electronics etc to charity , new immigrants, students etc on Kijiji , Craigslist etc ..the best thing I ever did.

The cost of moving it , selling it etc just wasn't worth it & the smiles & the gratitude on the faces of the people, who received it was priceless...way more than any money I could have got my selling it.

I hope your Doctor friend , who is already earning thousands is a bit charitable & generous !

I actually know a guy who did it the other way round. He was in Saudi for 18 yrs , just moved to Canada
1.5 yrs back . And bought all his stuff from Saudi over here.

Not sure how much it cost him & if it was worth it or not . Almost 2 months after he landed over here with his suitacses & family, the goods to follow came by ship or cargo or something.

I remember him renting a U - Haul & making couple of trips to the airport to pick the stuff..with his brother in law. His sister was already living in Canada for 5-6 yrs , when he arrived.

Lot of paper work was involved & was a big hassle for him.

Thank you.
The company you are referring to is in Dubai, is that right ? if yes, would they be able to co-ordinate for local pick up ?
There is so much material available over the internet to ship from USA to India and vice-versa and very limited from this part of the world. I confess, I did not google much and it appears I need to do that.

Thats bit difficult pick randomly. I will give few days and see how this develops.
Generally more time supposed to unearth more options.

I had used a shipping company to transfer my used items to India.
My company has asked for 3 quotes. I went with a company in Mississauga (which quoted the lowest) at 1600 $ then for a LCL.

My experience with them was good. They came promptly to our storage and took all the stuff. We had some pretty heavy stuff and only one old man was there. So in the -20 deg weather I helped him.

The goods landed safely. Of all the movers that I communicated with, he was the cheapest.
