Hi Everyone

We are considering a potential move to Halifax, NS and wanted to obtain thoughts from people who are either familiar with the area or have lived there.

1) What would you suggest as a approximate living expense for a family of three (kid less than 2 years old). I understand that this would depend a lot on the lifestyle and we lead a quiet life style (eat out twice/thrice a month, prefer to life in downtown, maintain one car etc)

2) How multicultural is Halifax? From what I understand, though Canada is multicultural, the diversity is not much prevalent in the Atlantic provinces?

3) I have seen some media reports on some racist issues that have happened recently (2009/2010). Would you say that things are blown out of proportion here or is there really a problem?

4) Some media reports suggest that differential income levels are causing a issue in increased crime in Halifax. Is this quite true or again things being blown out of proportion?

I really like the City (though havent been there but I have lived in Canada) and we are keen in making the move. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Cheers

We are living in Halifax for the past fours years and love this place..

Q-1) What would you suggest as a approximate living expense for a family of three (kid less than 2 years old). I understand that this would depend a lot on the lifestyle and we lead a quiet life style (eat out twice/thrice a month, prefer to life in downtown, maintain one car etc)

A-1 We are 4 members and for us it is about 1200~1500 per month. We own the house but you can get house/apart in the range of $600~$6000 rent or more.

Q-2) How multicultural is Halifax? From what I understand, though Canada is multicultural, the diversity is not much prevalent in the Atlantic provinces?

A-2 Depends what you mean by multicultural. Here we have people from Scotland, England, Middle East, China...Halifax is known for its universities and have a big student population..We think it is quite multicultural.

Q-3) I have seen some media reports on some racist issues that have happened recently (2009/2010). Would you say that things are blown out of proportion here or is there really a problem?

A-3) We have never seen or faced any racism (visible or invisible). People are very nice and friendly. There was once case last year and that was not in Halifax proper.

Q-4) Some media reports suggest that differential income levels are causing a issue in increased crime in Halifax. Is this quite true or again things being blown out of proportion?

A-4. Crime is there but nothing compared to what you see happening in major big cities in Canada. Most of the incidents happen if you move out very late in night and visit areas where there are bars/pub etc.. We have only read in news paper but have never seen or experience any crime..

Q-5)I really like the City (though havent been there but I have lived in Canada) and we are keen in making the move. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

A-5) We love living in Halifax

Q-6) public transport
A-6) Public transport is not as developed as any other big cities in Canada but that again depends where you live and where you want to go. When I came to Canada first thing that I did was to apply for the driving license and got G5 in first try. Went to GM dealer and got a car on lease so never got chance to really experience the public transport

If you like quite and nice place to live, Halifax is the place but there are not too many opportunities for work.

There is a very good scope of opening a decent Indian fast food joint
