The history of various nations shows that people, often having common cultural background secede/try to secede due to reasons other than language or religion.

Examples:
Taiwan from Maoist china

The civilwar in the United states where the southern states tried to secede

The desire of province of Montenegro to seperate from Serbia (both are serb majority places)

I feel it is high time that some one carves out a small independent territory for all Indian citizens who believe in Merit. The new Merit based republic would be a friendly neighbour to India and probably will have a common european union style agreement on movement of goods and people and with a common currency with India.

For arguments sake let's say Bangalore were to be a seperate country like Singapore which supports employment based on merit. Most of the investment will flow to Banagalore as companies would love the flexibility to hire the people they want instead of Indian govt. meddling with their recruitment policies.

This would create more jobs in that region and we can allow immigrants from rest of India who want to come and work there. This will create a nation based on merit and probably will excel better than rest of India.

Any body from rest of India can come there but have to comply with the law of the land - Merit will be criteria for private sector employment.

Are my thoughts wishful thinking or do they make sense?

Yours is a wishful thinking and you are making absolute sense.

Tamil Nadu wants to secede from India, form an united Eelam with Northern part of Sri Lanka.

The other people who are in the list are Punjab(Khalistan), Mizoram and north eastern state.

I do not know much about POK.

The way certain areas are going in Kerala, I'll not be surprised if they go the POK way.

In place of seceding, I would suggest that we offer \"Independence\" to states like Bihar, U.P, so that they cannot be a drag on the others. In India you find the one of the \"Indirect Taxes\" to be the main source of income, and certain states deliver the most, while some others do not contribute much. But the whole income is shared between all the states.

In railways Western and Southern Railways make all the earnings, while in Bihar and U.P the Laloos and Paswans offer a free ride.

Hence in India, some states earn more, but do not get enough money back for their development.

We should provide independence to UP & Bihar. This way they will need to start working their ass off.

In a sense it is similar to Ontario & Alberta in Canada. The other provinces live out of them.

Speech by Thomas Friedman of The New York Times....

"When we were young kids growing up in America, we were told to eat our
vegetables at dinner and not leave them. Mothers said, 'think of the
starving children in India and finish the dinner.' And now I tell my
children: 'Finish your maths homework. Think of the children in India
who would make you starve, if you don't.'"

Are there any places in India where FCs are a majority? I know there are a few towns and villages where FCs are a majority but I don't know of any major urban center where FCs are majority.

Any place where FCs are overwhelming majority can be a canadidate for carving out a small merit based republic in India.

Regarding Bihar and UP, you are absolutely right.

You are making perfect sense. I remember discussing about this almost a year and a half back with my friends in India. The reason was different.

Mumbai is going to the dogs. The infrastrucuture has collapsed and the future seems dark. Mumbai contributes majority of the taxes to the country but everything goes in the developement of Delhi. Delhi gets Metro while Mumbai gets a speech from Mr. Singh promising to make Mumbai into another Shanghai. After all the promises and swearing of support from the Central Govt. to make Mumbai a world class city, Mr Chidambaram and Mr Singh conviniantly forgot about their promises and gave NOTHING to Mumbai in the budget. Mr. Deshmukh just wants to be the CM and wouldn't go and question madam for fear of his chair being pulled from under him.

I say make western India into another country. Maharashtra, Goa, Karnataka, Gujarat and Rajasthan can made into a country.

amitcr,

Can you backup this statement with some statistics?

According to some economists, the four south Indian states - Karnataka, AP, Tamil Nadu and Kerala if they were to be a seperate country would have been the fastest growing economy in the world.

I know Mumbai - Pune belt is heavily industrialized but most of the new economy companies (software services) and the related foreign investment are in South.
(Ofcourse if you classify Karnataka as part of South India :D )

Now you guys want to break India up?:)

Remember UP and Bihar give the cheapest possible labour. What would Mumbai do without them? Who would drive the cabs, ricks, iron your clothes, sell vegetables, deliver newspaper, give you a massage, build your house, make your furniture, paint your walls, fix your sink, be your 'watchman' and the list goes on....:) :p

Anyway here are a few links which talk about the taxes collected in Mumbai.
