Nagpur, Nov 13: A recent study has revealed that 73.8 per cent obese children in Chennai are from upper middle class.
The survey was also conducted in three other cities; Nagpur, Aligarh and Jaipur, by Chennai-based Institute of Child Health last month.
In Nagpur, seven per cent children among 1,010 between the age of 10 and 12 were found obese. The study also warned that 20.4 per cent children are at the verge of becoming overweight in the city.
In Aligarh, 7.56 per cent children among 3,861 between the age group of 5 and 15 were considered obese, while in Jaipur 10.1 per cent children between 13 and 17 were obese.
The study attributed childhood obesity to excess calorie intake, consumption of junk foods and increased television viewing.
Parental obesity and family history of metabolic syndrome are associated with obesity, it said.
Commenting on the survey results, Dr Sunil Gupta, noted diabetologist and director of city-based Diabetes Care and Research Centre, said that childhood obesity should be addressed seriously as it will lead to many diseases including diabetes.
India has the maximum number of diabetic patients and the number will touch 57 million by the year 2025, Dr Gupta said today on the eve of World Diabetes Day.
The prevalence of diabetes has increased from 5.2 percent in 1983 to 8.2 per cent in 1989 and rose to 11.6 in the year 1995, he said. (Agencies)
Your title states "74% children (sic) in Chennai are obese".
The first line on the post states "(snip) 73.8% obese children in Chennai are from (sic) upper middle class".
Does the title reflect the content of the post?....I wonder...
Only 7 percent are obese - it is just a confusion with the title. Out of this 7 percent 74 percent belongs to upper middle class.
