1) Is your resume up to date with all your current experience?
2) how long were you gone back home for? If you were gone for a long period, then you will have to justify/explain this gap on your resume to employers in interviews. Did you work while you were back home or do any activities related to administration? Any volunteer work etc?
3) Get a recruiter to give you an opinion regarding your experience and your resume and get them to offer suggestions.
4) In the future, I would recommend not quitting a job becuase you wish to visit home. Career wise thats suicide. This shows employers that you are not reliable. Even as an administrative assistant, you are required to demonstrate professionalism and ability to be dedicated to your job. If you had to go back as an emergency, then you can explain that easily during a job interview.
5) Please ensure you have at least 3 good references - 2 from your most recent job. If your previous employer will not give you a good refernce, get one from a colleague but do NOT use ur previous boss if they will be less than complimentary towards you. a Bad reference is NOT better than no reference.
6) Assess your skills - are ur computer skills and awareness of the labour market up to date.

Try the temp agencies... in Admin Asst roles, you should be able to find temp placements - 1-6 months and some of them can get converted to perm ones later.

Do you have ur references right on your resume? if so, put them on a separate page and only submit them during the interview (or with the application IF it is requested in the job advertisement).
Recruiters and agencies are not the main sources for job search, despite the high number of IT professionals that get jobs through them. For most of the rest of us, its still the old fashioned method of knocking on doors (literally going out of your house away from your computer) and approaching companies you would like to work for and speaking to them in person with your resume in hand (cold calling..or hidden job market) to see if they are hiring.
If you can explain your circumstances to a new employer perhaps this month will not matter to your career (tell the employer u took your family back home for a vacation during the summer..or whatever).
Dont rely on agencies. Go to your nearest employment resource centre. Arm yourself with knowledge on how to apply for ajob and go and do it!! aim for 25 applications per week..again dont just fax or email them. GO in person and apply.

I do this - career counselling/employment counselling as my job. Its the main method of success I see in my clients that get jobs. No matter what their circumstances or occupations.

Good luck.
