I'm forced to ask the above question of whether India will be a superpower or a flop show based on the various events are happening in India?.
1.Aravind Adiga wins the Booker prize for his \"White Tiger\" where the book bashes India (or) exposes the true India, whichever the way we look at it. The country has shown great pride in accepting the award given to author.
2.The book of Vikas Swarup - Q&A after being made into a movie by Danny Boyle goes on to win the Golden Globe. Every Desi star from Anil Kapoor to SRK celebrate the win, while on the award platform, Anil Babu literally kisses Tom Cruise's white a%$e!.
This book again reveals the real India as we see the Dharavi slum. Again the development of this slum is being opposed by us Indians. But the real dharavi is shown here, while it might be a bit on stretch when they show the kid falling into the septic pit and running to get the autograph of Big B. The country again has fallen head over heals on celebrating this award, while the reality is that this exposes their true life.
Is it that you win awards abroad when you show child prostitutes in Salaam Bombay, Indian pedophile uncle in monsoon wedding or now Indian full of is wrong with Lagaan, Swades, Jodha Akbar or even TRZP?. Don't they represent the India which the firangs do not want to see?.
3. \"A-Satyam\" Raju is behind bars after having a dream two decades and today WIPRO is being barred by the World Bank. What next Infosys, TCS and others?.He tried to switch entries to a tune of USD 2 Billion in his book of accounts to save his children and caught doing it.
4.After the Mumbai Terror Attack nothing has happened, while Israel has bashed up Hamas right in their territory. It looks like Israel took out the revenge on the death of Moshe's parents( inactivity of India) by beating up Hamas. None of the border countries of Gaza like Egypt, Saudi and others have said anything about this attack, while it is said that \"they would like Israel to neutralize Hamas\". While Pakistan has claimed victory on neutralizing India's evidence(s) by countering it and now they say it is India's internal issue. While riots are happening in various parts of India protesting this Gaza war in the name of Muslim Brotherhood.
5.There was an attack against some of the militants in J&K by the Indian army and now we learn that the militants has slipped out even when they have been surrounded by the Indian army and hence the army has suspended the operation. Why do we need an Indian army, navy or airforce when they cannot either protect or counter attack when we have been harmed. The reason given is that Taliban is exactly 430 Kms from Amristar and hence if we attack the enemy the enemy of our enemy will attack us. The other reason being that elections are due anytime now they donot want to harm the minority vote.
6.Recently the \"future\" Tamilnadu CM was caught on video handing out cash and clothing to voters in Tamilnadu and the election commissioner even has filed a criminal complaint against him. We learn that the same party won the election today by a margin of 40,000 votes. It is learnt that INR 1000 notes were distributed in this constituency like graffiti.
7.Shibu Soren the CM loses the election and refused to resign his post and now has planned to stand in another location. He is a known coal criminal and became the CM after giving support to UPA government in centre.
We can go on and on about various events happening in India and you come to the conclusion whether the great news we heard about India previously has been a planned elevation by the western news media and now to drop it to down and beat the hell out of it.
I do not know only time will tell us whether India is one more banana republic or will be a superpower. Honestly I've started being skeptical about the India's growth numbers of 7 to 9%. Maybe somebody is fudging numbers here also.

Sunny Leone a true Canadian DESI now back in India !.
Vandematharam,
Welcome to Canadian desi.
I can see from your posts that you have a good touch with reality.
To answer your questions :
When I came to India in 1983, Most of the middle class/upper middle class people were not having any tap water, water was fetched by lining up in pumps, people used to wait 2 years for a Bajaj Chetak, when most low class people used to ease in open gutters..
Till 2000, the situation was more or less the same. In 2000, a Rs. 2000 salary and a professional degree (in my case) used to line up umpteen brides outside my house, each promising me a dowry of 1/2 crore in cash and assets.
Fastfoward to the current day (say 4 months before) and every tom, dick and harry with a professional degree earns atleast 50K with 2 years of experience. Software professional are the most wought after guys and property values in Chennai increased by around 500-1000%. we could see the latest cellphones, laptops even in middle class homes... As late as 2002, People had bet that the development that India was enjoying in 2008 might have been possible in 2200, but we acheived it in 2008. That by itself is a terrific assent.
Now with the US market being down, Indians are worried about the future and we are actually linked to the big markets. When US is up we are up and vice versa.
My personal beleif is that we will NEVER acheive super power status in the foreseable future based on the following :
1. Corrupt, uneducated, illitrate politicans without a vision.
2. Large population with a large number of poor people.
3. Failing and insufficient infrastructure.
4. Corrupt govt. officials + bribe culture.
5. Educational institutions not kindling the brain but mug and pass attitude.
6. Lack of natural resources (in huge quantities) like Petrol, Gas, Gold, Uranium etc... (as of now)
However, I do hope that I am wrong as we have one of the best IQ's and Hard working youngsters. Otherwise, how could we be a formidable super power in terms of Software outsourcing and out sourceing in general. Again we may be able see a miracle with India becoming a super power by 2050 or so by some unforeseen circumstance.
The plus points that I see are the following (which is of far less magnitude than the negetive)
1. hard working youth with high IQ and English language
2. Good destination for outsourcing as our wages are very competitive
3. NRI's sending money to India
4. Huge pool of youth who can take India to great heights provided right atmosphere is given
5. Climate which enables us to work 24/7/365 (unlike Canada where we have snow and freeze for 6 months a year, dulling our brains and making most people depend on Alchohol for the cold)
Hope this helps in moving the discussion further.
Peace by TK

TK,
While I acknowledge your contribution to this forum and your helpful nature, it is really disturbing to see the dowry topic mentioned so frequently in your posts. For you the amount of money, assets obtained as dowry may determine the level of success, for most it is utterly insulting and unacceptable. I request you to stop talking about dowry in the posts in a matter of fact way. It is NOT normal and acceptable to demand or receive dowry!!

Thanks TK and blorean.
TK, I understand that you mentioned dowry to compare, but my point is amount received in dowry shouldn't be used as a reference or standard to determine success or changing times or whatever. And it shouldn't be used in a way that it is norm. FYI, receiving or paying dowry is prohibited under Indian civil law.
