Dear CD members
I want to come to Canada to do MS program in Ryerson University...hopefully in Computer/network Engineering and IT related field. Is there any ex-ryerson here CD community who can advise me and give me some practical info regarding this university and career prospect after graduation?
Living in dormatory of RU or outside apartment is a better option?
I also want to know, can a student in Canada can have a SIN number and driving license?
Thank you guys, I wish you all very best. Waiting for some response....

RYERSON University is one of the best here in Toronto Down Town. They have excellent staffing and a great Alumni. You must have a link to them. As for the Admissions you will have to get in touch with them NOW. Seats will be scarce.
As for the postings, depending upon the standing and the availability of jobs to outsiders, then at that time, is unknown at this time and you will have to take a chance upon graduation. Currently, it looks bleak, even for the students that will graduate now and in the next few years. It is a wait and watch game and I do not want to discourage you now, but will say that it will certainly improve, but slightly. You do get a work permit to qualify for the Canadian experience. And currently it is open.
Ryerson took over a multi storied hotel and converted the rooms into student accommodation. Since then the situation has improved. There are twin participant and single rooms available at that location. There are others close by and they are private shared apartments. There is some privacy in all of them. If you have gone through dormitories, you know the quality afforded by the same.
Out side apartments will be as expensive as the education and without any food added to it. You will have to be specific about your taste in food when you ask. Or just join any of the food plans put out by any of the Universities and suffer. Things have not improved in that department. But it will keep you hungry and moving all of the time. Just for starters, you will not like anything except may be the soup and crackers. You do come prepared to face this.
Yes they do issue to you a SIN Number. The issue will be of a different series, the last I know. It is of temporary in nature. If you have been driving there in India and you have a License and it is in good standing and you can get it validated by the issuing Department of transport Office (DOT-MOT) and also get a statement from the Insurers that you have been a good driver since such and such period, and also have an International Driver's License to show, you can drive here. Based on this, you will be able to get an equivalent one, for which you will have to work here in your spare time. You can pick up one of the Hand books issued by them here, for about ten bucks.

Depending on the course load, and the advance state of preparedness, you need not stay close by, but can travel by Subway and here is another solution to it.:

Hope this will get you started. And please contact the right people for proper information and collate the same or carry it on a CD.
Good Luck.

Thanks a lot Freddie, really amazed with level of your knowledge and so helpful attitude.
I was wondering will it be economical if I have accomodation off campus and commute by subway for my class? What most of the Asian students do there? Any off campus apartment recomm. from you?
FYI, I have applied to RU already and waiting for admission decision. I was also accepted in the same program but didnt join in 2007. This year I decided to study again. I also visited canada in April 2008 to visit my girl friend.

The monthly pass for a commuter is about $90. Just today they said they want to jack it up slightly. Generally all of this is covered as a factor when people rent out the places close by. All in all it will work out to be a sum in the ball park. (Here we say six of one and half a dozen of the other)
Get admitted first. Keep in touch with the student community group. You should explore the links and the groups formed by the students there in. You can get in touch with them and get as much or more and in detail as to how they are handling the situation currently, in the current economy. It is amazing and how ingenious they all are today. What I have provided to you in my last post is just the leads to them. To get on top of it, you will have to pull up your socks and get moving and be fast. You just have another six months to make it. And I am sure you will get another positive response too.
You don't have friends here but you have roots to a family. So be guided accordingly.
You are in the FOUR R group. Reading, .... and now Romance to top it off. Can you ask for more.
Good Luck.
Freddie.

IMO - you also need to figure out the time taken to travel.
I met a student studying downtown but living in Richmond Hill. He'd spend approx 3 hours to travel to and another 3 hrs from the University, at times for a day in which classes were for only 2 to 3 hours.
It might be better to live closer to the Univ.

Guys Thank you all for your posts! I need some specific info about off campus housing nearby Ryerson ( or it is ok if it is in reasonable distance with convinience of commuting, like nearby Subway station). My requirement is just 1 studio room with bathroom and internet connection(kitchen could be an added adventage). I am a single man so thats enough for me during student years. I will appreciate a few recommended places name with rent range.
One more thing, is it difficult for students to get credit card in Toronto? Right now I have 3 major credit cards and I am so much used to them, it would be hard for me if I dont get one in CA.
Please be kind to help.
