The below was provided by a labour market research team that keeps up to date with what is happening in British Columbia as well as across Canada:
They write:

While men across the country are losing their jobs in sectors from auto-manufacturing to forestry, new data suggests that older women are finding jobs in record numbers. According to Statistics Canada, since the recession began in October, 60,000 women aged 55 and over have entered the labour market. When we look at most other demographics there has been little growth, yet women in this age range have increased their numbers by 6.4%. This now means that the current national unemployment rate for men is 9.2%, compared with just 6.8% for women.

The variety of jobs women are obtaining is significant. Specifically, women are finding work in real estate, finance and insurance, as well as in the accommodation and food service sectors. It’s also been established that 70% of these jobs are in full time positions.

When asked to comment on why the number of women is growing, one labour market analyst suggested that women typically have the right attitude and abilities to fit with the struggling economy. She noted that women often have larger and formal networks. She also feels they focus on sharing, and have more of a team approach to work.

Analysts noted that women now outnumber men for having university degrees and given current enrollment numbers, this imbalance is expected to grow in the coming years. They are also finding that women are more often starting their own businesses as a response to traditional employment situations where their advancement might be limited by their gender.

That's why I keep insisting my wife continue to aspire for bigger positions and bring in the top dollars while I can stay at home and enjoy my tools and toys and work on my wish lists :)

Time to join university...while wifey is at work....;) Happy valentine's day!

But sort of makes sense..at around age 55 most of very well educated women had gone thru all the difficult phases of life such as marriage, child birth, cheating husaband, teenage kids, etc. and many of them attempt to study while running the chores. That probably makes them ready to face any situation. Moreover children gone self dependant and husband became useless makes them more focused on work because no one at home she has to worry about.
Go girl!

Women demand lesser salary than men and older the woman , lesser the family baggage she carries and thus more dedicated to work than back home.

Question is are those oldies also doing IT, finance, banking ? they are'nt walking a dog for sure or fork lift in warehouses ! it will be interesting to know what field are they getting employed - changing diapers for retired baby boomers I suppose !

Why these correspondents get always half cooked data !

Senor Boothnath - Man (a male mammal ..narr ) is all time wanderer, stays useful till last rites (never goes useless, rather want to get used anytime anywhere) !! :-)
