If you don't have any prior SAP project implementation experience only way you can get a break in USA/Canada is being certified first
When I get into SAP that time there were not that much need of getting certified due to limilted SAP resource in the market.Most companies recruited based on functional/programming background and used to send them to SAP for crash courses
So before jumping into SAP first check your expertise ares and decide whether you want to be a Functional or Technical consultant.As far as current market is concerned there is a demand for experience Func Consultant

How is the job chances for a SAP certified consultant in Materials Management Module without any Project Implementation experience but having experience in the functional area of Materials Management.

It is almost impossible to get a SAP job without implementation experience
You need to look for a co op program to gain your first implemenration experience in Canada
