I have a brother who is 36yrs old and has been Schizophrenic since he was about 16yrs old. He lives with my parents and is taking some treatment in India by the way of counselling and medication. As my parents are not getting any younger, it will eventually be up to me to take care of him. I would like to know from CD's if there is any chance of sponsoring him to immigrate to Canada. And then if that is successful I would like to put him in some kind of Rehab/treatment program here. Thanks

Sorry to hear about your brother.
Your brother could be your dependent, if not for your parents. The Govt. of Canada may look on your parents as his dependents.
But sure, if you sponser your parents along with your brother, it can happen, but I doubt if you can sponser your brother alone.
Please read CIC(dot)GC(dot)CA for terms of sponsership.

Murali Krishna.

P.s. (Just as I am working in my office, I still have the copy A2 size of the apartment drg. that you have me sometime in 2008 and it just in the table near my desk in India. Thanks for it)

Thanks Murali.
Sponsoring my parents is something I have discussed with them, but they are not too keen on being here. My father has been getting nice job offers even at the age of 68yrs that pay him better than decent salary and he would like to keep busy there. And Mother wants to stay with him. They tend to brush aside my concern for future course of action by insisting that they will take care of by brother until they physically can. But I know it will be up to me sooner than latter to do some thing. Thanks for your reply.
Good to know those drawings are still useful for you. Let me know if you need some from the one I am currently working on.
Take care.

B. Ash.
My father was in the same state. He was 73 hale and hearty and he was taking care of my 70% disabled mother. I was having some family problems and hence could not meet him often. I met my parents for a few hours once a month.

Suddenly one fine day he died, leaving us to take care of our mother. We have moved our mom to Chennai (where my brother is) and we have hired a full time attendant (11K+ 3 meals a day) to take care of her. Why I am telling you this, you never know what will happen. Sooner or later you will be forced to take hard choices.

Life is Canada is so tense and with a home, you tend to be preoccupied with your troubles in Canada, when you donot know what is the situation with your parents.
The reason again being that Canada, may only allow direct dependants to be sponsered. So for the sake of your brother, your parents should also be willing to take the pain of coming to Canada. Sponsership processing may take 4 to 5 years and hence by that time, they will be ready to come to Canada.

Other choices include asking them to come on Visitor's visa and then asking your brother to stay back due to H&C grounds. If all this fails, then the last option is to see if you can get a job in B'lore. Trust me, life will be much better for Architects in India rather than Canada. Besides in Chennai, I have never seen any property less than a crore where as in B'lore I am seeing villa's built in 3 cents for 40 lakhs and all.

Please think of all options and decide. I invite SS and FH to pitch in their comments on sponsership.

HI TK,

What do you mean by holding back by brother on H&C grounds.

H&C means Humanatrian and Compassionate grounds.
First you should sponser your parents incl. your brother to visit you. In case you get the Visa (which is quiet difficult, as per my understanding).
If they get the visa, ask them to come to Canada. Then you should file a paper with the Immigration stating that your brother canot be taken care by your parents (as they are getting old) and that as the next in line, that your brother should stay with you in Canada.
This requires a lawyer.
This is being done routinely by many immigrants.

Hope this helps. This is just only one of the many ways that you can help your brother. Also there is a better success rate, if he comes via USA and applies in the US. This is provided he has a visa to come to the US.
