Hi

Would like to know about the tax structure in Montreal.

Is it more than Totonto?

Is knowledge of French absolutely imp. to land a job over there? What are the job prospects?

What is the cost of living there?

Thanks
Suman

Tax.Yes its more than TO.
http://www.gov.mb.ca/itm/invest/advantage/p_costs2.html
http://www.fin.gov.bc.ca/archive/budget99/tb99_h3.htm

Knowledge of French. Not absolutely important. However, it is very important :) . My suggestion is to look for a job and find one here before moving. Job prospects...as good or bad as TO- depends on you.

Cost of living. Lower than TO. Do a search...been discussed before.

Does anyone really pay taxes in MTL? they are so spectacularly high (on paper) that i got the impression living there that very few people actually pay them. the GST (in quebec le TPS = \"Tu Paies Sacrement\";) is avoided by one and all. many jobs are under the table.

in fact it's hard to find anyone who's officially 'working'. so many people i met are on some sort of social assistance (which is why the taxes are so high in the first place) and working on the side as a waiter, clerk, etc.

i'm not advocating any of these practices, but it seems to be the way many live in MTL as opposed to TO where everything (as far as i can see) is above board. there are quite a few posts on MTL already; check these out for more info.

Although tax in Montreal is quite high than Toronto but if you have family and particularly little kids Montreal is a better place because of following
(1)Day Care is cheapest only max $7 per day that too from 7:30 AM till 6 in the evening.
(2)Apartment rate is comparatively cheaper
(3)Public transport is cheaper and excellent
(4)Auto Insuarance almost 1/3 comparing GTA for the same year car and equivalant driving experience
(5)Odd jobs are not that difficult to get ...my wife doesn't understand French and I took her to 3 agencies one day and several times she got call for general office assistance jobs ...but she couldn't join as she got admission for Masters in Computer & Elec Engg in Concordia (Graduate study is also very cheap if you are a quebec resident)

But I do agree that it is always better to know French if you want to settle down in Montreal. There is only a few English speaking company in Montreal so job oppurtunity is limilted if you are not bilingual

Thanks

For newcomers Govt will even pay (Now they are paying around $130 per month,if you are primary applicant you could get more )if you go for full time French course(9 month)
