When you die people will bury you no matter you were looking up or down. You need to have an overall picture of things. If you only look up, you will certainly feel dejected.

The fact remains that all these surveys are done either by western media, companies or organisations funded and controlled by them and therefore they rate this countries very highly. Canada is supposed to have the best medical facilities in the world - but we who live here dare not have any major illness - not because we can't afford the treatement, but because the doctors and facilities are not available. So all these survey results are cooked up, and obviously do not take the ratings of those countries which are smaller but much better than them.
Having lived in Canada for some time now, there is no place here where there is no corruption here. Not many peopl know it since they are "immigrants" and dare not try it. But you try it and get your things done here too.
Perhaps that is why many Indians who might not have high creditials from universities and professional organisations, are very successful here since they know that Canada is no different from India - one should be practical and know how to move things in this country. You will find be-iman people in all walks of life here - governemnt, politicians, police, driving licence office, not-for profit organisations, well established franchises, banks and the list goes on..........
India is not worse than this country - the only thing it lacks, and which is major cause of our backwardness is UNITY. The day we are united, either by heart or by dictatorship, we will be able to prove to the world our capabilities. Just like Canadians, or Americans we should be able to unite and say " hey guys, we are Indians - you dont mess with us" and that will be a bright day. However, when and if that will happen, is beyond anyone's guess.

I agree that these studies are sometimes warped and biased but we you cannot discount them altogether.
Corruption exists in all countries. But the difference is that in countries like India, corruption is all pervasive and we see it everyday. As they say, in government offices one needs to bribe even the pillar (of the building) to get things done. Whereas in countries like Canada, the corruption is hidden and is not evident in everyday life. One can't get away from a traffic ticket with a little bribe to the officer and such.

I agree that corruption is not as evident to the lay man in Canada as it is in India. By that logic I think that one can safely assume that it is more rampant in India and I would not discount the survey. One of my friends in Mumbai had a collection of 2 rs coins in his glove compartment. He kept it there for the traffic policeman and 2 rs was enough to satisfy the policeman for the basic(in India) traffic violation(running red lights speeding etc). Even 7-8yrs ago 2rs was not a big amount.
Having said this I believe that every society goes throught this phase of rampant corruption. Around the 1920-1950's Canada and US went through this phase too. As awareness of social progress/responsibility took root, this problem became less common. I think this is possible in India too, though it may take a lot longer. A socially aware society is key.
People do not think twice about bribing someone in India . If people are willing to go through the inconvenience, that is a consequence of not giving bribes, then the problem will be solved. I'm not sure many of us (me included) were willing to make that sacrifice when we were back home. Basically the buck stops here! We are part of the problem!
