I think every country in the world has superstitions ( here are some North American - A Black Cat, Friday the 13th, walking under a ladder). I think superstitions are part of a culture and that superstitions don't make a culture/country / religion worse.

So let's just focus on the funny part.

O Friend , you started this thread ridiculing How people use Goddess Laxmi for their superstition. may be was funny for you but not many. This is same discussion, as it started. Lets not run away just because NM is part of this thread. lol.

OXFORD Definition
SUPERSTITION : Excessively credulous belief in and reverence for the supernatural:
RELIGION : The belief in and worship of a super controlling power

May be Oxford got it wrong, morons, they know nothing , Lets try another one
Mariam-Websters
SUPERSTITION : an irrational abject attitude of mind toward the supernatural, nature, or God
RELIGION : an organized system of beliefs, ceremonies, and rules used to worship a supernatural power or god or a group of gods ( Perhaps they added 'group of gods' only for hindus) .
Thoda theek lag raha hai..
Screw them, Lets be superstitious forever, do not know why , but lets be. Thinking is not our job, we just follow.

Lol! you should have cut some vital part and hung it to your laptop. Look up the definition again, use your brain, if any and ponder.Your FALSE group of Gods Lenin, Mao, Marx, Stalin and communist belief have killed more people and put billions of people through pain and misery. A communist is a sick guy in mind and have no morals. Ponder and chill.

I don't get what your point is. Look, the idea behind the post was to make fun of the ridiculous beliefs. It was not meant to make fun of people's faith in Goddess Laxmi or whatever god they believe in. We have to distinguish "Shraddha" from "Andha-shraddha".

There exists a thinnest line.

Superstitions also has family roots.

Usually, anything associated with rituals during death is avoided on normal days or on happy occasions like a wedding. Example, pradkshina and apradakshina.

Superstitions when followed regularly becomes customs and not following them may invite the wrath of the entire family/caste/neighbourhood.

Mahatma Gandhi when he returned to India after his studies, was invited to his caste congregation, severely criticised and ostracised for going abroad. He did not bother, but still went again to South Africa.

The world might have got a Mahatma, but as a family man was he successful?

People criticising one set of superstitions themselves follow another. Like laying flowers in a grave, garlanding statues etc.

What should we say about gun salute, march past, trumpeting done by the military people? A person not subscribing to these may do something the solider did to Rajiv gandhi.

Here are some more:

- If a baby is crying continuously, it is probably suffering from 'Buri Nazar' or evil eye. The solution is simple, take a left shoe/chappal made of leather, hold it in your left hand and then rotate it around the baby three times counter-clock wise.

- Pregnant women should not go near an abandoned well or an old Peepal tree.

- Pregnant women should do nothing during an eclipse - if they cut something, they will have a baby with a cut lip; if they roll something, their baby will have a flat nose....so on and so forth.

- Seeing certain people immediately after getting up in the morning can bring good luck or bad luck.

- Touching a cow on your way to an exam brings good luck ( I actually did this many times when I was in school )

- Barren women should not be be allowed at certain rituals related new born babies ( this one is so cruel! )

- If one finds a black doll (a few inches long) with needles pierced through its head, in their house, then someone has cast an evil spell on the household.

- If a crow is cawing outside your house, you are going to have guests.

- Some people have supernatural powers that can burn a house down, kill cattle or destroy crops.

- You want to know God's wish about something, put a flower on the head of the idol of your favorite god and then say whatever you are thinking of doing, if the flower falls on your left side, don't do it. If the flower falls on the right side, go ahead.

- When you buy a new car/motorcycle, before you drive it around, crush an egg and a coconut under its wheels.

- Chewing on a Tulsi (holy basil) leaf before an exam results in good grades.

- If it rains during a wedding, the marriage is going to last long.

- The kitchen or the bedroom should be on the specific side of the property ( this falls into the VASTU / Feng Shui category - the modern pseudo sciences. I know I am going to get some rebuttals on this ;) )

Disclosure - I was born and raised as Hindu; an engineer by education; view the world through the lenses of Physics; follow some sensible religious traditions/customs to appease my family members.

A few more:

- If a bridge or house collapses during construction, it means the place is asking for human sacrifice.

- A Lord Ganesha idol or picture with the trunk turning to the left (from the viewer's point of view) is ominous.

- Put a knife under your pillow to prevent nightmares.

- Do not whistle inside a house or it will attract snakes.

- Do not lend certain items (yogurt, oil, etc.) after dark ( I am not fully sure about this, but I remember my mother telling this to us many times.)

- Do not go out of the house on the evening of Lakshmi Puja, or the goddess will go away.
