Hello All,
Won't cry my eyes out, but after living in US for 9 years seems my Green card is landing in trouble. I won't lie, I love living in US and quite used to the life style and I think Canada can offer the same (or better).

I've been trying to read on internet & watch the videos on youtube, but still not clear what I should be doing, e.g. How to :
1.) Get a job in Canada while in USA
2.) Get a job with a PR associated with it, so I don't land in the same boat as US
3.) Identify which jobs can sponsor my PR

I think I'll be here(USA) another 1 year, and want to start preparing so I'm not digging the well when thirsty. Need the guidance/advise from fellow Desi's/Canadians as to how I should proceed. I'm not sure if people use head-hunters in Canada, but if there is a good one who takes care of the PR along with the job I'd be interested in knowing them too.

Something about me, in case that helps :
Computer Engineer, have close to 13 years of experience with some certifications (Sun Java architect 5.0/PMP). I've been told I'm a good PM (hopefully true !!) and can geek out on many technologies.

Would appreciate any pointers you guys have. Thanks.

This might help you

I don't want to disappoint you but computer engineers are in fact the ones who have a hard time finding a job ( related field ). Computer industry is like 10% of US and you seriously have to pin on luck to get a decent job

Pick Toronto for eg., look up in the sky with a plane landing - that plane will have at least 5 immigrants and out of them 1 will be an engineer. They will eventually pick up the same newspapers, apply and get no response and ultimately will sell insurance, work at the brick or drive a cab and as time will pass and you get to know people, then, you might have a chance

You case is slightly better as you have US experience but it will take time, I would suggest moving to Vancouver instead

You are living in a dream world my friend. There is no lifestyle here. Its taxes all the way and a harsh reality.

You wont even get a quarter of lifestyle of US.

With you experience if you are lucky you wil get a good job,

Life in canada is an experiment. The more experiments you make the better or worse it will be here.

Everything in life is luck finally.

I have lived in both countries, and I'd pick Canada over US anywday ( subject to steady job ). There is not much "fun n games" here but people are happy with moderate income, decent car, free health care and mainly it's culture and people

US is all about big stuff, and its kinda hard to explain it, it's kinda laid back here and u can always fly down to US

Getting Job (anywhere!) depends on individuals ability, experience, persistent approach and right-time-right-opportunity. I wo'nt generalise that OP cannot get a job in Canada. 9 years in US is good experience which a needy Canadian employer will consider, for example project starting soon and OP agrees to take sunday flight. Sometimes HR is hard pressed to recruit. Only setback is no status in Canada (PR/Citizen/open WP) and none in US. Qn is if an employer will be ready to process work permit on Indian PP? I will suggest to go through some IT resourcing/consulting companies rather than applying on your own. As all job websites will ask question like 'permitted to work in Canada ? '

following seems to be the options :
1. Check if your current employer have option to transfer to some Canadian subsidary.
2. Look for employer in Canada who is ready to process Work permit (you can apply for PR after working for some qualifying period on work permit). one year time is good time ot strike a luck.
3. Apply for provincial program, you may qualify for quebec province. this can go in parallel with applying and working on WP.
4. Look for some immigration consultant / lawyer who can do some jugaad under an employment category for you. (profession may not be same in that case and govt is going stricter on such cases)

I have lived in both countries, I agree that savings will take a big hit in Canada. In US you must be saving almost 50% of your salary. Here that may not be the case. But it depends on your decency vis a vis flamboyance in other words you chose basement vs luxury place , child day care vs local aunty care, civic vs beamer, Casinos & beaches vs local public parks.

GeekyPM Bro, this forum deserve to know , how you got screwed on US GC ?

Canada offers the best employment chances for IT people and esp for people who have like 13 years experience (Incl. USA exp).
You can blindly come here. Chances are that soon you will say that you like Canada more than the USA as your citizenship is guarenteed here. There are ways to find savings here too.
All the best and looking forward to welcome one more citizen to this sparsely populated rich but wasteland.

Peace

We were in similar boat 5 years back. Had packed stuff to go to India. But PR arrived. Since stuff was packed, we decided 3 months..if we get decent jobs in IT, we will stay else Mera Bharat Mahan.
Fortunately got jobs in couple of weeks and now settled here. Apart from taxes and poor healthcare, life is peaceful. You can think of settling here. But remember you need to get job first and then think of settling..without job you will eventually become desperate and then frustration will creep in and then you will start to blame Canada, goras, kalas, system, etc..and ultimately will realize that companies in India are great, they provide canteen and airfare just for fun etc..
Just curious which state do you live in?
