Am moving into toronto for a one year diploma from Toronto Film College at 36, Eglinton Ave, West, 7/1. Dont know a soul in Toronto. Am finding it a bit difficult to locate reasonable acco..around my college as all ads seem to be quite expensive...am also sceptical about the horror stories i have been hearing about lanlords leaving tenants freezing in their rooms by not providing adequate heating...

Regarding your landlord comment - besides the one post that just came up a couple of days ago reg. the landlord, AFAIK, there hasn't been any other post of landlords switching off heat during the winter.
Keep in mind you cannot judge an entire nation based on one persons experience.

You shouldn't judge all of GTA based on one person's experience. And that too, which may (or may not) have been exaggerated by them one way or other.
Secondly, if you are REALLY so worried about heating, then prepare in advance and bring along a room heater. (You probably will not end up using it once you get here) but if you are that worried, the please prepare yourself accordingly. 
Try Craigslist http://toronto.craigslist.com (Hate this sites web server config converting URL to LINK word) under housing section. Lot of people advertise for apt. rental as well as room to share, roommate etc. Using it with Google Map, you should be able to find acco. near TFC.
