Hi all,

I have been told to move to prince edward island on 31st of July.I have spent 2 days so far in the company. The company is Millenium Care-www.milleniumcare.inc.The primary reason they are shifting the office is because of cost cutting. There was no formal induction neither they took my SIN number so far.I dont understand what is happening. All they gave was an offer letter to sign up thats it with a copy to me.I was made to sit for 2 days with a person who is working and he explained to me.The job is technical support/help desk kind of job with 15$/HR.35 hrs a week. The manager told me that a truck would be moving to PEI,and i can put my stuff in that and even i would be moving in that truck!!!! and its a 2 day drive so be prepared for it etc.He is going to provide me a 1 month accomodation in the home he is going to buy but since he is coming a month late he is giving it to me.There is no fixed date of pay.All its written semi monthly pay.And i saw ppl discussing abt pay getting delayed for 3-4 weeks and the manager asking the employees that whether they can push there pay for 1 more week. These kind of things are really bothering me and putting me into depression. At one side I see an opportunity at other side moving to PEI,financial stability of the company, making me move in the truck are making me afraid.Iam currently working in the evening also in a Call centre for my survival.Iam afraid that i dont lose both the jobs

Hi Vivek901,

Looking at your situation it's hard to decide whether you should accept the move or not.

However some of the issues that you have raised like irregular salary payments etc. raises question mark in regard to the stability and consistency of the company.

I would opt to sacrifice my present state only if my new position calls for a place which is stable and secured in all respects.

I would not move to Prince Edward Island with a job which leaves room to judge its stability as in PEI job opportunities might be less as compared to GTA.

Regards,
AAA

How many years experience do you have ?

PEI is a beautiful , safe place and I m sure you will enjoy hopefully . 15/hr appears a tad low , but it is an inexpensive place .

Employment agreement should be signed by both parties and copy given to both ... They should have taken your SIN no. in the first place but as long as your employment letter is in place ... it should be ok ...

Truck journey can be a blessing in disguise ............ you would get beautiful views on your way atop good height ........ I m assuming you would be sitting in the front and not with the cargo :) ......... They should pay for other expenses and initial accommodation .

Tech Support jobs squeeze extra time out . Ensure that you are being compensated or better take time off .... check the time off in lieu policy .........

You can always relocate after a couple of months , if you don't like the place .... Halifax is not far and Keane and CGI are always looking for new people ..... They would be happy that they don't have to pay for relocation experience ...

Gain 2-3 years of Canadian experience and return to GTA when times change .....

Check out the cost of living in summer side .... or request your employer to make initial arrangements ... 1 BR in a shared house could be something like $250/- .

Your post is giving me the feeling that your employer is "shaky". These are the basic things I would expect after getting the job offer:

1. The employer asking me the proof to work legally in Canada
2. Concrete pay dates and sticking to those dates
3. An option of decent move - not in a moving truck along with the furniture

Your employer is even changing the location of your job site. Comparing these points to the good salary that he is offering, I would get an impression that he is trying to lure you with this so called better pay.

Personally I would not move to a job like this one unless the employer ***REALLY** convinces me about the stability of his company.

These were the thoughts which came to my mind also.Even the call centre where Iam working right now atleast they have fixed dates of pay and the calculation of how it is made etc.Actually Iam feeling now that I made him feel that Iam desperate for the job because the interview i gave was 2 months back and I followed up also after which may be because the ppl whom he had selected may have not turned up,he called me and told me that we will be moving in August, then he again called up and said You would be moving at the end of july which is July 31st.I mean the decisions are so confusing. There is nothing called as HR i feel or administration. Many employees who are in toronto are on contract pay.The biggest thing which bothered me was I thought I would be made to fly.Intially they told charolettetown, now its summerside. But that too going with the cargo. That too they want to move the company thats why they have arranged for it otherwise they would have told me to go on my own.

Coming to FIDO's reply
I do understand that canadian experience can help me but there should be some stability in place where iam working.I also heard the place where this is being set up in summerside is again not fixed.I would rather work in a stable job where only my performance can throw me out. These things are too bothering sometimes.Going in truck the view can be good but it is making me realise that company doesnt want to spend a single penny on me for relocation.
They dont have fixed dates of pay. What can I assume from these things?Iam new in this country and these things make me really depressed and sad and the feeling that I was better off in India is coming to me. :(

You mentioned that you are bachelor and your brother is here in Toronto .
Job in PEI as you mentioned is more hours and more per hour rate than current position you have , so I would suggest you to move and stay there for at least three motnhs and if you are not happy there then you can come back to your present position ( I am assuming your brother will be in toronto ) .
Leave on good terms from your present position .

If I were in your position I'd take a chance ...

Good luck -:)
