Please guide us. Also, is Jan a bad time to land in Canada? Will the weather be too bad?

Thank You.

Weather-wise, January is one of the coldest months in Toronto. You can expect lots of snowfall and below freezing temperatures. Put it this way, unless you're nuts about skiing, its not a very happy-happy month here. Life still goes on though and anyways, this stuff helps you appreciate summer a lot more :) .

This is the second time you have posted your question. I was hoping someone would respond, but apparently this board is becoming quite sluggish. Don't see too many members logged on for long.

The reason why such questions are not answered immediately is because of lack of details given by the inquirer - and it is a very general question. If I were to give a meaningful answer to such a question, I would need to know a few things before I can make a suggestion:

1. The size of the family - that is the first criteria which will make you measure how big or small place one would normally need.

2. Approximate ages - If you are a couple with 2 High school children, you would have a different requirement (generally) than a young couple with two small kids. This would again translate in size of the place, kind of schools needed nearby (or university), ned of public transport or not etc. etc.

3. An approximate budget. While a enquirer might not have any idea what are going to be the costs of renting/buying, he can atlest suggest what he is presently paying, to give an idea what lifestyle that person might be having. It would make a difference, in my view, if a guy coming from Bombay lives in a suburb like Kandivili in a one bed-room apt, and another guy living in Cuff Parade in a three bedroom apartment. And even if the person asking the question does not have much idea about costs of housing, they would definitely have a budget to go along.

4. In my view, there can be a big difference in expectation of housing for a person coming directly from India, or coming from USA after having lived there for some time. Not only because of money availability, but also because of different lifestyle having developed after coming to USA for the same person.

(When I moved to Singapore 20 years ago, I would have been happy with a 2 bedroom apartment - but when I moved to Canada, after having lived in Singapore for 16 yers in condos, I simply could not think of staying in ordinary apartments with no laundry facility in the apartment itself.)

5. One's ability to be able to buy a car immediately or not - that as suggested by someone above, would translate into requirement of public transport, and therefor need to be near it or not.

When I had moved to Canada 4 years ago, I had clearly told a friend of mine what were my expecation and budget and the ages of children, ability of wife in case of need to drive, etc. etc.

Unfortunately, most of the people tossing questions on this board, do so in a very casual manner, and only when probed, give more details. You can see the difference in the below given question:

1. What is the cost of a TV there?
2. What is the cost of a 27 inch, Japanese brand like Sony TV in Canada.

I know no one can give a right reply even to the second question, but it gives you an idea what the person is actually looking for and then your response can be more meaningful, then simply saying 'The cost of TV can range from $200 to $3500' which is a correct reply by all means, but not meaningful atall.

Thank you pratickm and BlueLobster. All the info. does really help. This is a great site and i'm grateful to all for guiding us. I'm sure i'll have more questions as i try to dig in for more information. I will get in touch by email if i need specific details. pratickm, thanks for offering ur address as reference. I will get in touch if i need it.

I would also like to add that we are a couple with no kids looking for a decent apartment ( in the range 750 - 1000) that would have basic amenities like refrigerator, oven, dishwasher, laundry facilities, air conditioner, parking and a balcony wud be good. And not too far from work places. Also do not prefer high rise buildings. If anyone can provide any references, links; that wud be really helpful.

Also, can someone provide us with information regarding mosques in Toronto. We would like to live relatively close to a mosque if possible. Please advise.

Thanks a lot !!

This website has every neighbourhood in Toronto listed and a tool called the "Neighbourhood Finder" that will suggest areas based on your lifestyle needs. You can learn about each area on their profiles and even browse properties and connect with a real estate agent.

It's worth a look for anyone not totally familiar with Toronto

Good luck!
