CD members,
A friends of mine is staying in the aprtments near Hwy10 and Queensway. His wife had gone to India for a 6 month emergency and he was staying all alone. Apparently a theif saw this. Day before yeserday, the thief went in to the house by breaking the lock and made of with jewelery of the house. Luckily they did not have much jewels and the loss was around $4000 K. The thief had tried to break open a locked suitcase with a hammer but was unable to to so. So he carried it away. Luckily in the staircase area since 2 desi's were there , he left the suitcase there and ran away. Also when the thief was breaking open the lock, a friends daughter (12 yrs. of age from the opposite apartment) came to the peephole , wondering what the noise was. She found a man of a community being racially profiled for drugs and he was hefty. The girl also thinks that he is from the same apartment.
When the desi came back , he was schoked. He went to the super. who told him to call the police. So they called 911. The 911 people told them to call another number.
When the police came, they told the desi that since a person advertises on TV as to buying jewelery , the spate of jewellery theifing was on the rise. The police also advised the desi that he should not be telling the country that he was from to non desi's.The police also advised him that he should not speak about the country where he was from in public. The reason was that theifs specifially are targetting Desi's.
Sankaracharya,
You have met with this kind of situation before (Did not happen to you but to one of your friends). What is your advise. As a result of this, the desi concerned is thinking of quiting Canada and going to work in London (He is in IT). He is really frustrated of being here. Can the police find the culprit and charge him? Will the theif pose any danger to the 12 year old girl who may identify him? (i.e. after the thief gets out of jail or his associates). Is the girl safe if she testifies against the thief? The girls parents are very very concerned about this.
What is also your advise so that we can keep his tax dollars in Canada rather than his tax dollars going to the UK or even USA ?
I will update you on the progress.

I am a Gents and not a Ladies.
The cops were not able to catch the guys shooted randomly at innocent public ( boxing day shooting) in downtown, They are not able to stop hit and run incidences happening every day in Toronto.. wondering if they could catch a thief here.
African Canadians, many of them are uneducated, they are on welfare, have 4 or 5 kids per home to get child welfare fund from govt. No wonder the grown up kids from those families turn out as criminals and we are living in a city where A-Cs count upto 35%, so if you want to live here you have got to live alongwith such things.
Moderate laws( to punishing criminals) are indirectlly increasing the crime in Canada.
I would say it won't be safe for that girl to testify.

My parents-in-law moved to canada from india around three years back. They were helped by a friend to get an apartment somewhere in toronto. My father in law opened a bank account and applied for a bank locker as they were carrying a lot of gold with them and didnt want to keep it in the house. They did not get a bank locker right away and were told that there is a waiting list for the same but they should expect to get one in a couple of weeks. The biggest mistake they did was to not to get the household stuff insured. But, you know how it is when one moves with family to a different country. House insurance is last thing on mind, at least for the first few weeks. Well, they got robbed of all their jewellery, unfortunately. They were crestfallen, all their hard earned money for all these years gone in few minutes.
But the worst part was what followed. The building in which they had the apartment had security cameras, twenty four hour security personnel and so forth. When the security was asked to hand over the surveillance camera video copies for the last few days, they blantantly denied to hand it over. Obviously, my father in law had filed a report with police and when the police asked the security guy to hand over the video he conviniently stated that the copies for last few days had been misplaced. The most surprising part... The security guys were all desis. Ok, fine, not from india, but still desis. Their attitude was obnoxious. Couple of days later the guy from police who was investigating the case went on vacation. My father-in-law kept following up, but, after three years the result is a big Zero.
Well, i hope this is not taken as one of those canada bashing posts, because this is not intended to be one, as this could have happened anywhere. This is just to make other newbies more alert.
As they say, the best way to learn is from someone else's mistakes/experiences.
Cheers,
Jagz

Very sad incident . I Know that it is important for all to buy home insurance when we know that we are new to this country and living to survive.
Mr Sankarcharya message can be helpful for all of us..
Can someone write a To Do and Don't Do list:
1. General security measures what everyone should normally take.
2. What to do after such an incident?
3. Insurance one should take to cover such instances.
