WASHINGTON: Universities in the United States have started accepting three-year bachelor degrees for admission to graduate schools, a move that straightaway opens the doors of American varsities to a massive Indian pool of three-year B.A., B.Com., B.Sc degree holders.

The US move follows a European decision to harmonize the degree structure under the so-called Bologna Process to award a bachelor's degree in three years, rather than the four years that is the norm at US colleges and universities.

The new structure takes its name from the 1999 Bologna Declaration when 29 countries resolved to create a European Higher Education Area by the year 2010.

The Bologna Process since has grown to include 45 countries, virtually forcing the US to accept the three-year degree.

India too becomes a beneficiary of this change.

I think US has done this for its own benefit. People from India do not consider coming to US anymore for higher studies. They prefer working in the high tech industry in India now. This is one of the steps to attract the crowd. US economy runs with the international students' parents hard earned money.

zorro is right on the target.

American universities need foreign students to sustain. I did do my graduate program in US. American students are less than 10% in the graduate program. When this is the case, from where else they bring students? Its not like Canada where there are less no. of universities. Each state in US has number of them. So they need the money and the students to sustain and survive unless they just stick to only undergrdaute programs. So BA, BCom graudates have to shell out thousands of dollars (lakhs of ruppes) to come and study in the US schools.

Now in India there is BSc computer science (3 yrs). No wants to come to US when there is a job waiting for them.
