Please see the above link in which a person in Canada gave false degree certifactes (MBA, Ph.D) for $3000. This was locally recogonised and a person who got it even completed her law degree in osgode law college. The person who issued this degree is still not arrested or jailed.
This creates a very ugly situation for immigrants. How will an employer think that your degree from outside Canada is genuine, when you canot even trust local degrees.
Hope some CD will take this issue to your local MP/MPP so that it is a law that once you are granted immigration, your degree should be held as genuine (the testing should be done by the visa office granting your immigration and should be legally binding).
Thank God IT people even donot need a degree to work / be employed in Canada (that is why I am studying IT). May be it is for this reason that IT engineers are gainfully employed.

What purpose will it serve? Will it improve job prospects of immigrants? Checking degrees is the last process in a hiring process, if checked at all.

If one is in restricted occupation that requires local licensing, etc., they will have to get it anyway even if Canadian embassy certifies that the degree issued outside Canada is original.

If one is not in a restricted occupation, already there are organizations in Canada that do degrees evaluation and state degree equivalency to Canadian ones. I am not sure if it improves job prospects.

Here we go again!. TK - I agree with rajcanada...... what is the point of writing something that appeared in the Star, apart from just starting another thread here? Let us not forget that unlike India, the government wakes up and takes action.

It is hard to trust Indian degrees because even today, degrees are available for a price. So much so that even a record is created in the university, should someone check the genuineness of the degree.

Nehru once said that when we point fingers at someone, we ignore the dirt at our back. Sadly true - all we do is find excuses, keep pointing fingers - that's like a national pastime for us!

As for someone being forthright and honest, listen to what Jairam Ramesh, environment and Forest Minister had to say, this week : Our cities are the dirtiest of the world. If there is a Nobel Prize for dirt and filth, India will win it,"

How many of our ministers have the courage to speak so openly? I know that before you know, there will be brickbats by the thousands, showering on him.

Why degree is so important? Is it difficult to test the knowledge of the person who is presenting fake degree? If someone is proving himself a doctor then how difficult it will be to prove that he is not what he is claiming? I think it is important to pay much attention to the knowledge the person has than the degree.
