Security has been tightened across the country for the tenth anniversary of the demolition of the Babri Masjid tomorrow.
Nowhere is security more alert than in Ayodhya itself. The whole city has been divided into several zones each allotted special police units.
Security forces have also been deployed in the three temple towns of Varanasi, Ayodhya and Mathura, especially in wake of the recent attacks on places of worship.
In Mumbai, where blasts bring back harsh memories, 5,000 policemen will be on the streets from tomorrow morning.
Entry points guarded
For the Mumbai Police it has been a tense week leading up to the December 6 anniversary. After the bomb blast in Ghatkopar on Monday, hoax calls have been coming in virtually everyday and the entire state has been placed on high security alert.
The police say that entry points to the city are being especially guarded. "Even before the bomb blast occurred in Ghatkopar we had planned a very elaborate system which would include deployment of manpower all over the city," said Ahmed Javed, Joint Commissioner of police, law and Order, Mumbai.
That will also apply in Ahmedabad where patrolling has been increased particularly in the older parts of town. The Intelligence Bureau has warned of trouble tomorrow given the VHP call to hold a Shaurya divas rally but the police say they are prepared.
In the capital, all of Delhi's 55,000 strong police force will be on special alert especially around places of worship.
Speedy trial demanded
Meanwhile the Opposition today decided to pick up cudgels against the government.
Leaders of major opposition parties held a protest rally near the Mahatma Gandhi statue in the Parliament complex to demand a speedy trial in the Babri Masjid demolition case.
"The Home Minister, who is the principal accused should not continue in the ministry. As when the judicial process begins in the court, it is the CBI, which will assess the case. And the CBI is unfortunately under the direct supervision of the home ministry. This will threaten the objectivity of the trial and it could be vitiated," said Priya Ranjan Dasmunshi, Chief Whip, Congress Parliamentary Party.
"We condemn the incident as we continue to battle communalism inside and outside Parliament", added Somnath Chatterji, CPI (M) leader.
BJP stuck on Godhra
The protesting leaders also demanded that Union Ministers like Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani, Human Resources Development Minister Murli Manohar Joshi and Coal and Mines Minister Uma Bharti, whose names figure prominently in the conspiracy angle case, be brought to justice soon.
Meanwhile, the BJP today attempted to turn the tables on the Congress. The party argued that if the demolition of the Babri Masjid can be raised as an issue ten years later, then the burning of people in the Sabarmati Express in Godhra is even more justified. (With PTI inputs)
