At the outset I am no tax wizard, nor claim to be one.

the very first thing that confused me was his first line:

You cannot claim more tax returns (if that's what your question means)!

What does that mean?

a) his sentence is same as OPs sentence so where is the question of saying if that is what you mean?

b) I have never heard of claiming tax "returns" - would someone enlighten me on that?

Next, having given an authoritative answer to the main question, he says a tax expert will be able to give an answer for tuition credit - if he doesn't know it how could he first say that more tax returns (I think he meant refunds) cannot be claimed.

But then may be I am not understanding the things properly - and that is why I am confused.

One of the rules for claiming the Tution and Education Credits is that the Institute has to be certified by the Minister of Human Resources and Social Development.
How can one find this one out ?

I want to find this out for two institutes where these courses were taken.
One is the Canadian Securities Course and another was an institue that teaches computerized Accounting.

I ofcourse also have to call them and ask if they will give out the T2202A form, as just the receipt for the course is not sufficient for claiming these deductions.

At the end of the day, by how much percentage do these deductions reduce one's income.

Tax whizzards---few questions

I am going to file my tax soon. My questions is as follows:

My husband was not working last year except 2 last months, and his income is very less compared to me as he was completing his education in canada.

Now in my turn I have work the whole year with an income bracket over $50K. what i would like to know how can i claim more tax returns???

Should my husband file seperate becoz he receive less income and can earn more returns and i file seperate by transfering his tuition fees on my income??/

Or

Should we file together?

Pls advice in order i can go ahead for filing my tax

regards

mashu

You cannot claim more tax returns (if that's what your question means)!

1. You cannot file a joint tax return (filing tax together as you have asked in your post) in Canada.

2. You both have to file separete returns and include your spouse on your return.

3. If you have paid the tuition fees for your spouse, I think you get some educational credits for that - the tax experts will be able to give you details on this.

a)
"You cannot claim more tax returns (if that's what your question means)!"

What does that mean?

Ans: You got it right - the OP's posting itself did not make sense - that is why I said you cannot "claim" (or file) more tax returns. And that's why I said - "is this really what you mean?"

b) the answer to your question "b" is given above.

Hope this post clears your doubts..
