There is a certain amount of financial investment that is inevitable in a job search. Parking, incidentals (coffee..etc) .. a good quality(not cheap) interview suit and shoes.
The science behind job fairs is this:
1) know ahead of time what companies will be at the job fair and create a resume and cover letter ADDRESSED to that company (you can select the companies you are interested in..or apply to all..but not all companies will have jobs in your field). Check the companies websites prior to the job fair to see if they are hiring in QA (ie. ur particularl field).
2) Treat it like a networking event. Know your 'audience'. The purpose of being at a job fair as a job seeker is still to sell yourself. Read up on some of the companies (again..most job fairs advertise ahead of time what companies will be there).. at the job fair you can go upto a company, introduce yourself and say that you are looking for a ___ position (NEVER say "i'll take anything". Take a professional looking note book with you and jot notes while or after speaking to the person. Ask them questions about the company and their future goals. Ask them what qualities they are looking for in a prospective candidate. Etc. You can get lists of questions off the net. I'll see if i can find some and post later.
3) Give them your resume and ask if you can contact them in a week to follow up on your application. If they say 'go online and apply" tell them that is fine..and ask if you can address your cover lette rto a specific individual in HR/hiring/manager etc. Ask questions like the turnaround time for hearing back. Ask if there is any way to follow up on your application.
A job fair may or may not be the key to getting a job but it is a very invaluable place to 'chit chat' with prospective employers. Most of the time if you JUST go and apply online .. you dont get to talk to or ask questions of a live human being. Usually there is no way to speak to anyone.
Sometimes.. you can impress the right person at a job fair and they may give you their business card and say 'send me your resume". That is a very good sign.

I think all community colleges and ASQ certification across canada are money making business. Only little bit it helps in making career. Dont wonder, if you do not get jobs based on your study.
Yesterday, I was at HRDC centre. People from canadian business college came for presentation. They said, by doing their course they guarantees jobs. Fees were around CAD 10000.

Knowing your background from past posts it is obvious of you to talk in favor of job fairs. I strongly believe companies at job fair are present to get Canadian Babies entering work force. Rest of the people are lured to make a big gathering and to have show look successful.
I have not met anybody getting a job from these so called job fair. I want to hear at least one desi to confirm that they made it to employment from the job fair.
It is my opinion after spending time and money on these fairs. I had to finally return to school for recertification and borrow couple of thousand bucks from government at prime plus 2.5% to have my dream come true.
