Dear 905 Desi,

I have Q.A and Q.C experience. Backhome I was lab technician and doing Q.C along with little bit of Q.A. In Canada,I studied Q.A I have a month experience as ISO auditor. I am science graduate not engineer.

There is a certain amount of financial investment that is inevitable in a job search. Parking, incidentals (coffee..etc) .. a good quality(not cheap) interview suit and shoes.

The science behind job fairs is this:

1) know ahead of time what companies will be at the job fair and create a resume and cover letter ADDRESSED to that company (you can select the companies you are interested in..or apply to all..but not all companies will have jobs in your field). Check the companies websites prior to the job fair to see if they are hiring in QA (ie. ur particularl field).

2) Treat it like a networking event. Know your 'audience'. The purpose of being at a job fair as a job seeker is still to sell yourself. Read up on some of the companies (again..most job fairs advertise ahead of time what companies will be there).. at the job fair you can go upto a company, introduce yourself and say that you are looking for a ___ position (NEVER say "i'll take anything";). Take a professional looking note book with you and jot notes while or after speaking to the person. Ask them questions about the company and their future goals. Ask them what qualities they are looking for in a prospective candidate. Etc. You can get lists of questions off the net. I'll see if i can find some and post later.

3) Give them your resume and ask if you can contact them in a week to follow up on your application. If they say 'go online and apply" tell them that is fine..and ask if you can address your cover lette rto a specific individual in HR/hiring/manager etc. Ask questions like the turnaround time for hearing back. Ask if there is any way to follow up on your application.

A job fair may or may not be the key to getting a job but it is a very invaluable place to 'chit chat' with prospective employers. Most of the time if you JUST go and apply online .. you dont get to talk to or ask questions of a live human being. Usually there is no way to speak to anyone.

Sometimes.. you can impress the right person at a job fair and they may give you their business card and say 'send me your resume". That is a very good sign.

Knowing your background from past posts it is obvious of you to talk in favor of job fairs. I strongly believe companies at job fair are present to get Canadian Babies entering work force. Rest of the people are lured to make a big gathering and to have show look successful.
I have not met anybody getting a job from these so called job fair. I want to hear at least one desi to confirm that they made it to employment from the job fair.
It is my opinion after spending time and money on these fairs. I had to finally return to school for recertification and borrow couple of thousand bucks from government at prime plus 2.5% to have my dream come true.

I think u are looking at QA/QC in manufacturing cos.. Manufacting is dying in ontario..

Try to get into software testing.. , i know many ppl including my wife who have managed to get into this area..

Some have entered by creating fake exp and are contracting at big Telcos..

Go for training at software testing course at HiTech institute.. and also put in some hard work for a month..

Try using careerbridge , they help ppl like u who have recently migrated and do not have jobs..
My friend got into Rogers through career bridge..

I think all community colleges and ASQ certification across canada are money making business. Only little bit it helps in making career. Dont wonder, if you do not get jobs based on your study.

Yesterday, I was at HRDC centre. People from canadian business college came for presentation. They said, by doing their course they guarantees jobs. Fees were around CAD 10000.

You are right. ..As the spouse of a professional immigrant who struggled with settling in Canada..I have seen it live.

I am in favor of job fairs..and any other networking opportunities that a person can use to gain valuable information about the prospects in their industry.

A job fair is to let you know which companies are out there, and which companies are recruiting for staff on an ongoing basis. Most companies thats end up at job fairs are marketing themselves and looking for ongoing staff..not necessarily a current job. This gives you a starting point in your job search.

You dont have to take my word for anything. I know from my line of work that its important to treat yourself as a 'product' to be marketed..ie/ in your own business. If you dont sell yourself, no one will be lining up to buy(that sort of analogy).

The question asked was 'what is the science of a job fair'. This is what I answered..it is asking what is the PURPOSE and GOAL..not that everything always leads to a job offer. There is no guarantee of a job at the end of a job fair. However the value of attending a fair is intrinsic. Just like when you contact employers for informational interviews. You dont do it to get a JOB offer..or give a resume..but just for Information purposes.

You dont have to attend a job fair if you dont wish to. There is no requirement to go to one to get a job.

Just FYI. If you do decide to sign up for a program through one of these private business collegs..do your own Labour Market Research before buying into the stats that the colleges present. As you mentioned they are businesses and will give you stats like "100 percent placement rate"..well they dont tell you what that means..

You can get a better recognized training through a public community college than the private ones. probably cheaper too.

Good luck.
