I am planning to buy a used car. Which places, apart from newpaper classified, I can look to buy cars? Any online sites? Any other tips are appreciated.

Do spend $30 and get an unlimited membership of CarFax.com. You can check history of the car by entering car's VIN. All cars have VIN visible from the outside next to Steering wheel on the dashboard. Genrally numbers start with 1/4 for cars made in the US and 2 for cars made in Canada.
If you are buying a car from a private party in Ontario, you must ask the owner for used car package. It lists the wholesale as well as reatil price of the car without any options. Which will give you a benchmark to start with. Wholesale prices are what a dealership will give you, if you trade your car. You can also try http://www.autotrader.ca" rel="nofollow">LINK and look for the make/model/year/mileage of cars which will give you a rough idea of how much the car is worth. If you know any good mechanic(thru your friends or they know one), get the car inspected first. Also insist on checking service records. Which will tell you how well the car was maintained. Ask owner what all problems he found with the car and were they fixed.

Why do you want buy old car. I had a bitter experience with old cars. I would advise to go for new one for example if you buy GM chevy aveo LS, LT, modles with all options it cost around $ 20000/- now available on 0% interest for 72 months. Your monthly payment around 290/-pm and drive for 72 monthswhatever kms. after 6 years you can sell it for around 5000 dollars if the car is normal wear and tearcondition .If we own a car the average monthly owning cost alomst 250 dollars plus insurance depends upon your location and gas whatever your use plusmaitance cost around 50 dollars (approx ) for midsize cars. In this way you always enjoying driving once in 5 years or 6 years without any major issues. Also insurance wise also it cost less. This is just my view.
