Legally he is out of status. He needs to renew it as soon as he found that. 'Do not wait too long after the discovery'.
Freddie.
Freddie,
I talked to CIC call center people some time back and they did confirm that an expired PR card doesn't mean you are illegal. They also told me there is NO necessity to apply PR card unless you are planning to travel abroad.
PR card is a travel cum identity document for Canadian PR holders just like a Canadian Passport is for Canadian citizens.
An expired Canadian passport doesn't mean you are not a Canadian citizen. In the same way and expired Canadian PR card doesn't mean OP is not a Canadian PR.

I thought you would understand it after people posted so many replies - we all understand that he is NOT out of status just because of the expired PR card. Hope this is clarified (to you) after reading these posts!
""This is COMPLETELY WRONG! The PR card is the ONLY acceptable proof of your status while ENTERING Canada from abroad. Even if you forget to renew the card while you are in Canada, you are NOT out of status. Your status is perfectly valid. The only thing is you will not be able to prove your status in case you leave Canada and are trying to re-enter Canada.""

It is only when people who are wanting to travel, that they look for their PR Card Validity. Otherwise they have not bothered to check, renew or apply for a NEW card or renewal. There are so many of them like the O.P. They come to this board seeking a little help.
If you go through the Immigration website, you will see what they say. And here is whay I know as the Gospel Truth,
* ""Since December 31, 2003, the PR Card has been the proof-of-status document required by permanent residents seeking to re-enter Canada on a commercial carrier.""*
You all are entitled to write or scream here, whatever you want.
This proof of resident status is required only at the time of re-entry. Also, this is the only card that bestows upon him the Status that he is a Permanent resident.
His entry depends upon the Validity of the card and the STATUS that goes with it.
No validity - No status.
At the same time you nor any one can knock on any body's door,(If they are living in Canada) even of you know that his/her PR card's validity is over, that they are not one. They can carry on living here in Canada just like you and me. That is my statement. They are also here. This O.P. is also one and he is seeking your help.
Freddie.

"No Validity - No Status" This is added by you. This is nowhere on the website. Nobody is screaming here, just want to bring you out of your state of denial. Do not write long essays here, it is very simple and people have explained it in a couple of sentences.
We have tried to explain it in the simplest possible terms, if you do not want to understand, it's your choice.
