My Dear Freddi,

My wife would be completing her 3 years of stay in a block on 4 years in Oct ' 09. I may not be able to complete even 2 years till then. I thus think the best would be that when she completes her 3 years , she immediately applies for the citizen ship and on obtaining the citizenship, she sponsors me as her husband so I come back and stay with my family here in Canada.
Please advise :-
1.if the above is feasible
2. how long it takes for the citizenship from the time one completes 3 years of stay in canada
3.How long it takes to get the citizenship from the date of application --- we are in Alberta
4. Is it advisable that I stay in canada at the time she applies to sponsor me after she gets her citizenship or I go back and return after she has sponsored me.
5. Most important question : When she sponsors me... how long would it take for my application to get processed. Does the application processing takes the times similar to normal applications for immigration ?

Please advise ... I am sure your valuable advise can help many of us
warm regards,
Akhil

Hello Akhil,

I gather that your wife will be completing her three year qualifying period with in a four year period for her citizenship in October of 2009.

1) Yes she is eligible to apply for her Citizenship of Canada when she has her 1095 days completed. Any children here with her also obtain their citizenship are eligible too. Unfortunately you will have to wait till she gets it or complete your own 1095 days to qualify. I see that you also know the short cut to it.

2) From the postings here from others on the website, the minimum I see is between 6-8 months. Some have waited upto a year to get it. They have not posted if there were any complications or interviews called for in their cases.

3) I think the process takes the same time there too. If you are following up the thread on Citizenship and see what they are saying about it in Alberta, you can narrow it down. Say between 6-12 months as I read it. These are the two extremes. You can do your own postings here and wait for the same from some one in Alberta.

4) If you know the exact date of entry as stamped in your PR card, you are eligible to re-enter and be with her and also cheer her up on that day. Once you get in, you can stay here and don't have to go out. And if you do, that will call for a different procedure for re-entry.
Not knowing you line of work and the time off associated with it, you can decide what suits you the best. If you are here, then stay here and renew your PR card if it calls for. (If the time is up)
If you want to return after she gets her Citizenship, it is O.K.too. You still have to have a Valid PR Card. Otherwise you will have to get a permit to enter. (Entry Permit)

5) No, you just get back in here into Canada based upon her Citizenship. All you do is get an Entry Permit based upon you being married to a Canadian Citizen. (They might ask you for a Police Clearance Certificate from where you were hanging out) Currently if you don't have a Valid PR card, it will take a minimum of 60 days for the Permit. If your PR card is VALID, then just get into Canada. Then work from there. Get back to us then.

Hope this helps you a little.

Freddie.
