As far as i know emissions is required for registration alternate years.. yes emissions report is only valid for 3 months.. From what i had read when i bought my car if it not ur year of emissions then u dont need it while transferring ownership.. But emissions can give some indication on fuel efficiency and is always recomended while transferring because if u dont do it during ur decision time it is possible next year the car may fail emissions and u are stuck with the remedial fee then..
Not sure if it is PST or GST but only one tax applies, percentage also i am not sure..
Trade in u have to pay both PST and GST on the difference i.e the money u will pay the dealer..

Get the seller to do Safety and Emission before u say yes on no
Safety is mandatory
Emission is required for alternate years depending on year of make.. so this may or may not be required depending on the year of car. but doing emission will give u peace of mind about the car.
Correct me if I am wrong - I thought emissin test is required WHENEVER one wants to sell a used car - unless the last emission test report is still valid, which I think is 3 months.

Private sale usually saves on PST...
And I thought on private sale you pay PST (the seller) - while if you are doing a trade in, you save it since one is set off against other.
Is my understanding wrong??

if car is worth 3000 or less carfax is not much of use.. The car could have any history but as long as mechanically it is running fine u should not care...
Basically UVip covers extreme conditions like odo rollback and salvage title conditions..
Other details like accident, theft and major repairs are present in the carfax..

Both safety test and emissions test is required every time you buy/sell a vehicle. Emissions test is valid for 1 year from date of test and safety test is valid for 36 days. http://www.mto.gov.on.ca/english/dandv/vehicle/used.shtml#safety
Emissions test is required once every two years for license plate sticker renewal.
UVIP is required by law but is not a very detailed report. You should go for Carfax if you required a detailed history.
Thankyou for responding.
The seller has agreed to get UVIP (He had already agreed for safety certification from CAA and emission test).
For Carfax I checked, it covers only major accident like 75 % write off or sthg.
I personally do not think it will be of much help but as we are investing so much, might as well try it.
I think you can register for Carfax , pay the amount , take out 2 reports and then if you wish - you can close the account and they have a policy of re imbursing your fees completely . Since they provide this facility , one must avail it .... I did .

Fido.
Sorry for so many questions.
I called a inspection shop, (listed in CAA) to book an apptmt, and he said he will do so if we have car proof report ($ 50). I said I have car fax report but he said that is not reliable.
Now I am thinking is he reliable ? Should I get car proof instead of Car fax.
this link says carproof is more accurate..
