I have generally driven on 401 E to Kinsgton and crossed into US from 1000 islands. What I have found is that once you are on the US side, there's less traffic on I-81, and you don't pay any toll.

The route I generally take is
401E - ON137 - cross into US onto I-81 until Scranton - I-380 - I80E - I280E - I95 NJ Turnpike (toll highway)

Toll: You'll pay toll at the border (bridge) crossing, approx. $3-4, and then on I-95 NJ Turnpike

It all depends how reliable your car is. Doesn't matter if it's serviced recently, but if it is reliable you should be fine.

You'd have to check with your insurance co. if they cover travel to US.

I'm pretty sure most of the big rental co's will allow you to take the car to the US. There may be extra charges incurred for travel to US, as well you'd need insurance - either your personal auto insurance should cover rentals cars to US or you'd ahve to buy insurance from the rental co.

Goodluck...drive safely .... and don't drive and drive....

Insurance are always valid in Canada and US.

Rental cars will allow you to drive to US if you take unlimited mileage option.
Usually they give you the unlimited mileage option.
You need to make sure you have all the papers of the Rental Car when you cross the border.

As for the insurance of the Rental Car you need to pay for it.
One option is to have a Credit Card which covers Insurance on Rental Cars ( Compact to Mid-Size ). This way you dont have to pay for any insurance which could be quite expensive.

I took a rental did not pay for insurance, drove from Toronto to NJ to DC to NJ to Toronto. Quite a long drive never paid a penny extra.

Hope that helps.

Never tried that Kingston route - but yes, it is less congested. Catch is you'll have to cross 401E @ 5pm on Thursday ... and in any case 401 should be better option than QEW @ 5pm.

I have always used my own car to go US. Your own car 'should' be covered. Check with your Insurance Company. I won't take that for granted.

For Rentals, if you are going to drive in NY City - let them know. Insurance coverage is different.
