Union Minister Kapil Sibal has proposd it. Hurray! great proposal. Hell with the 10th std board exams. Enough of memorizing and scoring marks. Students are welcoming it with open arms. As a parent, I love it.

As you have rightly said,Lacs and lacs of young boys and girls are passing the 10th exams, just by memorizing . Instead it would be useful if they start knowing about their own district in which they live, what it is famous for, industries, etc and learn some practiacal work. It will help in developing more liking for their own birthplace. They will not be lured by educational consultants. 1000s of youngsters go abroad, without proper qualification, talent or skill and get battered.
As early as 1950, Rajaji tried to change the educational system as CM of the then Madras State. He wanted students to learn traditional cottage industry work part time. But there was hue and cry, and he was accused of trying to bring back the caste system. The ruling Congress did not support him. From the post of Governor General to that of Chief Minister! Hardly10 months old in his tenure, he was convinced what he was doing was right and quit his post. Compare this with today's "leaders" who hang on to their chair even when 1000s of crores corruption charges are levelled against them. Congress and Nehru only had asked him to take the post of CM and save the party to curb the infighting amongst the congress local leaders.
If only somebody cares to read the 1950s files and regarding Rajaji's ideas, we may find that what Kapil Sibal is doing is basically the same.

I agree fully with Kapil Sibal. Board exam for 10th standard does not serve any real purpose. Creates unnecessary stress on students and parents, is a money grabbing opportunity for tuition classes and a cause of corruption for those involved with paper checking.
In Gujarat, 10th standard exams act as a gateway for entrance in programs like Diploma and PTC. Let diploma students learn physics/chem/math in 12th grade and then have only 2 year diploma program.
PTC programme also serves as pathway for normally lower income family to enter into job market. However, it does not really help students who will be taught by the teachers passing PTC programme.
Totally agree that it will relieve a lot of stress from students and parents. If not 10th then many students/parents will have to be prepared for entrance exams for diploma and other courses though.
There are number of schools where result is 100% up to 9th standard and 20% on 10th , if all these students go to 12th do we have enough infrastructures to accommodate them? Isn’t it a good idea to screen students in 10th so even they know their caliber themselves and decide where to fit (or to concentrate more on study)?
Yes its a burden that everyone can live without. I remember my father saying that they never had Board Exams for X ... and again dropping board exams all together ... hmmmm
For now, it is just a thought - it needs lots of considerations before it can even be remotely thought of implementing it. Lot of mental adjustments before expiring the board exams ... There is Huge Huge gap between X & XI/XII. From School to Junior College.
