I am an Canadian CGA, Please help me to chose a state to take CPA exam. Most states will not accept courses taken from CGA association
Thanks in advance
I observe that this is your first posting. Welcome to CD.
I do not understand why would you pursue CPA after CGA. CPA degree is useless in Canada. Atleast, that has been my experience.
If you are planning to settle in USA, then it would be best to take exam from the state where you wish to settle.
There were 2 states namely Delaware and Michigan which recognized Indian CA and allowed us to write exam. You can contact Becker training classes people and probably they will help you free of charge.
I don't agree that CPA is useless in Canada, a few years ago CGA's could write from Vermont not sure what their current requirement is you can contact beckers they can guide you further on this.
I also don't agree that CPA is useless in Canada, don't generalize and discourage people.
To OP, my husband is a CPA and works for Canadian company, I personally think what matters is your skills, the degree can be from anywhere. Conversely you can have 20 degrees behind your name but if skills are not there, nothing is gonna happen. The company sponsored our PR fully knowing that he has no Canadian degrees.

Hi Jona,
I am not trying to discourage people here. I just thought of sharing my opinion. I am sure Cds are mature enough to take their own decisions. My opinion was based on my personal experiences. Since he already has CGA designation, going after CPA may not be nuch help. You have rightly pointed out that what matters is skills and presentation. Let me elaborate a little. While CGA is recognized qualification for accounting job across all Government organizations i.e. Fedral, Provincial and Local, CPA degree is not even acknowledged. Government sector is one of the largest employer in Canada. CPA might be useful if the USA parent company wants someone with CPA for their branch in Canada. I hope this clarifies my views.

Thanks for this; I wasn't aware of govt. jobs in Canada. I'm sure to encourage their own education system they'll ask for Canadian education background especially govt. Sorry if you felt bad for my earlier post, in our social circle and beyond that I know a lot of people with Indian CA, or only US CPA, or CGA's all working for private sector but they got jobs because they had experience and skills of the industry and that's what I wanted to emphasize to OP (which you also explained well).
Thanks again...............Jona
