I got an email this morning from a friend in Bangalore who has an apartment in the same building as we. Fortunately we have kept our unit empty. It’s a new building and still some final work is going on. One of the owners in the top floors decided to do the house warming ceremony. I don’t know who these folks are. They bought a cow and a calf through the elevator for the ceremony/rituals (one of those right wing conservative south Indians). If its an independent house, then its ok. This is an apartment building. Worst was after the rituals were done, while the elevator was coming down with the animals and the guy who brought them, it got stuck. The generator for backup power supply is not yet functional. For two hours the animals were stuck inside the elevator. Finally the staff at the site had to break open the elevator to get the panicked animals out.

First this is nothing but animal cruelty. Getting the cow to stand in the congested space of an elevator (Indian elevators are small) and then getting stuck. Second what these owners were thinking? Getting a cow and calf through the elevator? My god! Are we in 2009 or in 1960s? I am wondering what’s next? Monkeys, sheep, cocks/hens, goat, etc. for some religious rituals! People who had lived in independent houses have very tough time adjusting to a apartment life. And most refuse to change. They will do things that they were doing before without caring what other residents in the apartment building go through. Looks like lot of desis like this owner are selfish and self centered.

Funny though :p

Reminds me of the numerous weddings that occur at Hotel Dolphin in Vizag where at the ungodly hour of 3, 4 or 5 am, the drums and the nadaswaram begins playing from the room where the bride stays all the way through the corridor to the wedding hall. No one bothers whether rest of the occupants would be disturbed or not.

My best guess is the rest of the occupants are there for some wedding or the other, hence they don't care either.

This is the uniqeness of India that i miss. Elephants on the road, Cows in traffic, Chickens running around on streets , Goats teethered near a building.

In north America everything is perfect, sterile and all cities look same .

But India is fun with all these unique stuff happening all the time.

Annoying and inconvinient but fun.

I don't remember the movie name, but it was Arnold following a bad guy on horse and used elevator to climb up.

It was movie though. This incident is really funny at the same time very pathetic.

I am not sure what the owners were thinking, but quite sure about what the Cow was thinking and her blessings...
