Hi Folks,
I would like to know the one or two bedroom house basement rent in Scarborough area. Also give your comments if basement house is more preferable over building appartments or not. I heard one will bound for 1 year approx. lease contract in renting Appartment. And in contrast there is no problem leaving the basement portion of house. As I am coming to canada with my family on June 2005. I appreciate your advices and experiences.:shoot
This is your second post and so I really wondered what happened to first post.

The thread ended not the way it should have!
Two bedroom basement could be around $750-800 or even less or more depending on various factors.
Apartments can ask you to sign 1-year contract whereas usually houseowners for basement ask you to give 30 to 60 day notice before you vacate the house. Apartment management can ask you for your job letter, bank details or a guarantor.
Basements, as the floors and roofs are made of wood in houses, you tend to get a lot of noise if somebody is walking upstairs. Some basements are deep and do not have enough windows for air circulation or light.

Basement:
* A lot noisy specialy if children also stay upstairs. Not suitable if u r in night shift
* Cold and dampy
* Stinks becuase fresh air does not circulate during summers (if house have air conditioning and they switch it on then only stink will go)
* Parking normaly outside garage, have to clean car during snow
* Very few basement are well finished, flooring is of poor quality
* Other restrictions imposed by house owner
* Save about $100 on rent, which is not worth
* Vastu shastra says that only dead live below ground level (reason to take an appartment )
I have stayed in basement for about 8 months. From my experience it is not worth for a savng of $100.

i second that basements are just not worth it.
you can barely look out, you can view the world as if you are an ant because you are always looking up at it. it always seems that its night time.
there is always some problem with the temperature indoors (either too cold or too hot).
an apartment is the better according to me
Also if the door to the main house doesnt have a lock you can have a situation where you doubt if the landlords kids have wandered in or stuff has been taken or moved.. well you decide but i dont think that anyone gets used to living in a basement

Guys, thanks for your valuable comments. From your posts it looks that basement choice is not very healthy decision. However think for the person who is just arriving and cannot present these things mentioned in Rajcanada i.e

In my case I have to look for the job and dont know which location I would be able to get the job. 100 or 200 extra dollars is not a problem but leaving the appartment 1 - year lease contract in the middle seems big problem. Your value advice is needed in this regard.

worst case do the following if you have to rent a basement
1. make sure its one with no pets or kids so noise is far reduced to one person if the husband or wife owners work or 0 if both do.
2. look at a semi-basement which is not so much below the ground.
3. look at it as a short term option for 5-6 months and then move once you get the job.
