Can some one write in detail how Google Wave is useful ?

What are the advantages ?

I have gmail id, but still not allowing me to use

It say install google chrome. Also it says need invite

What's so special about this WAVE ? Is it messenger kind of thing ?

Your gmail id wont work. You do need an invite and then you get a email id also.

Overall my impressions: its a waste of time

. The ideology is good and innovative. Real time email conversation. Its like Instant messaging and email combined into one. makes for healthy collaboration. If they combine these features into Gmail then it makes sense else not worth it using different email systems.
