Some key details are missing in the story as to how can one board the plane with just Aeroplan card as ID? Even if Americans do not require a visa to enter Canada, do not they require passport when they board the flight?

The Aeroplan theory has been shot down by Air Canada (although not sure if the denial can be taken seriously either since it was Air Canada who screwed it up). Major security lapse is what comes to mind based on the story. Truth might be someplace in between. Yes, passport is required.

The details are as follows. { A Srilankan once told me how it is done in 2002}
An American or Canadian has the flight ticket for this route.
Vancouver-Hong Kong-Vancouver.
Now this imposter has the flight ticket for.
Hong Kong - Thailand-Hongkong (where visa's are not required)
The imposter entered the airport using his original passport and ticket.
He will exchange the boarding pass with the american/canadian at the lounge (the tailand flight and the Vancouver flight must have been in the same lounge).
The Canadian /American goes off to thailand and the imposter to Vancouver.
As the details were told to me in 2002, I am not sure what ID. they require to at the gate to let the person into the plane in 2010, but I am assuming that the imposter now had a fake passport of the american or the Canadian. At the gate, they might not have the sophisticated equipment to dedect the fake passport and only check the photo, name on the passport and compare it with the face, boarding pass name.
Now the american/Canadian must have left in the thailand plane in a similar fashion.
This is how most refugee's come to Canada. The lawyer for this imposter has said that his client just followed SOP of how refugee's come to this great and mighty nation
