He he he...I forgot couple of names...had a brain freeze. Hence did not write...
Here they are...
1. Tahquamenon falls - we stayed in Newberry, MI, took a little train ride on a mini train to the river boat docks, took the river boat ride and reached the falls. Returned the same route. Or, you can simply drive up to the falls and enjoy. The water has high ferrous content and everything tastes and smells like metal. I don't know if they offer that train and river boat pkg anymore.
2. Pictured Rocks in Munising, MI. Interesting rock formations.
3. Seney Wildlife refuge between route 77 and route 2 in upper MI.
4. Beach access to Lake MI off route 2. Sort of limited as there are private properties along the route.
5. Sault Ste. Marie, ON - Train rides to Agawa Canyon park and beyond. Need to cross over into Canada. I think trains run upto Wawa, ON. Or few people enjoy the drive along route 17 (I believe it is part of the trans canada highway).
The fall colors peak around labor day around these areas and leaves begin shedding beyond that time.
I am sure there are many more, but the above are locations we have visited.

Just came back from Watkins Glen State Park off Horseheads, NY. Several trails with the Gorge Trail being the prominent one. A lot of manmade diversions of water and trail resulting in couple of opportunities to walk behind the falls. Although, it's a beautiful trail and park, there are too many people as this is one of the more popular same day destination. Because of the crowd, we seem to have had to pay more attention not getting bumped along the narrow trail parallel to the gorge than fully enjoying the park.
I wouldn't go here during any long weekends or holiday period.
I have an early childhood memory of visiting this location. My family went to visit my father's old friend who worked in Elmira. He was always the nicest, friendliest man and then on our trip to Watkins Glen I saw his other side, he spent the whole way down that trail saying "watch out little girl, you're in uncle's death path!" He was a very rational engineering type so his assessment of the situation alarmed me. Fond childhood memory now, scary at the time.
These are really good suggestions although I've only been to Watkins Glen, Sault Ste Marie and Mackinaw. I'd suggest any students looking to see more of the Canadian (or American) outdoors check if their school has an Outdoors Club. I know McGill and McMasters do, and you can join school organized hiking trips with those who are more familiar with the area.

Just another note. To enjoy most of these parks, you'll need to walk on uneven non-paved surfaces and / or rock steps. If you have stroller bound children, these are not suitable locations.

I always prefer to go for summer vacation trip with my family.
You can go to hill station or to the beaches during summer.
