Make in India initiative of Modi is turning to be a game changer. Over the next few yrs (by 2017), as per World Bank India's growth rate is expected to be the fastest in the world (ahead of China).
Interesting times ahead, this happening at a time when lower crude price is a given for a prolonged period. Lower crude is a recipe for problem for all oil exporting countries (& Canada is one of them). On contrary, India being a major oil importer is saving enormous amount on its oil import bill. For every $decrease in oil price, India saves 4000crores on its import bill.
This low oil price alone is enough to wipe out India's fiscal deficit.
Imagine the potential opportunity, future holds in India.

think Canada is still better than India for a common man to live. I disagree with Febpreet. The real estate price is within reach as well. If you see the House Price / Salary ratio, the ratio is far better in Canada
Let me prove it with example
I am comparing Mumbai with Toronto. The price in Mumbai for a 2BHK flat in Andheri is close to 2 crores. The house hold salary if I assume to be 30 lacs (which is not the average salary firstly and the average is far lesser). If I go to Mumbai, I would be paid 20 lacs at the most and my wife would be paid 5-7 lacs).
So 2 CR/ 30 lacs = 6.67
If I look at Mississauga and the price which is around 500,000. The house hold income around 130K. The ratio is 500,000/130,000= 3.84.
So even most optimistic numbers in India I am not getting a favourable result. So the housing is still not affordable in India compared to Canada. If the prices in Toronto are unrealistic, prices in Mumbai too is unrealistic.
CAR:- A good car in Canada, lets say Honda Civic costs around 25,000$. The same kind of good car in India costs 15 Lacs
So Car Cost Ratio:
India: 15 lacs/30 lacs= 0.5
Canada : 23,000/130,000= 0.17.
I think though we are not better off than USA in terms of affordability but we are far better than India. There are lot of areas I feel where Canada could be better than India such as health care, sorry I don’t feel healthcare is good in Canada, except that it is free (not free exactly since we pay a premium of 1000$ as a household). I still find health care better in India. Affording maid, servants is easy but that does not make a country better. Other than that, infrastructure, pollution etc all don’t make India easy to live country.
Vivek,
I understand what you're saying, and completely with you on the numbers. However, my point being, it is becoming increasing difficult to buy a decent house in burbs these days, even with a combined income of $120k/annum. I am not talking about buying in Windsor or the towns 2-3 hours away from the city proper. The trend ensues in GTA and Metro Vancouver. Even the suburbs such as Brampton and Surrey, where Desis earlier used to flock due to their affordability is now getting difficult to approach due to the close to $600k homes. Mississauga (GTA), Delta (GVRD) and Burnaby (GVRD) are completely out of reach.
Let’s say, you can still buy $600k house with $100k downpayment mortgaged over 25 years. Fair enough! How would you think the situation be in case you lose your job? Where’s the cushion?
You want to buy a townhouse or Condo in these cities? Sure, go ahead and see your investment diminishing each day instead of the gains. Been there done that. Semi-detached? Last I checked (Open House - personally) 2 years ago, a semi without a finished basement on Mavis and Derry (Mississauga) was listed for $500k. Even Milton is catching up or already has. Newly built semis (2-3 years old) are selling for $535k. That’s a sad reality.
Earlier, I was of the opinion that GTA suburbs are a bit affordable than their Vancouver counterparts. Heck! I was also planning to move due to this factor alone and because a flourishing IT market in Toronto, but not anymore as I see the difference in house prices is getting tinier by the minute. I don’t want to commute 2 hours each way either. So, you have less choices these days even with $130k/household.
Not that easy, bud. However, one difference between India and Canada is, we can still stick our nose through and obtain mortgage on $600k property. How you end up paying is a different question altogether.
Imagine life for people outside the IT industry. Major population still lives on minimum wage, or some at even no wage, how do they live?
