Be honest, before this Raj Thakre and Media row, didn't you have marathi speaking friends? Just because of Raj Thakre are all of them became bad and hating all others..no.Very few to none response supporting my views indicates it very well. I have very good friends who are not from Maharashtra.
Marathas are the bravest people in Indian history.
We can go back in history and find that many a marathas have fought for Indian freedom and sacrificed their life for this cause.
We can start with Chathrapathi Shivaji, Balgangadhara Tilak and come all the way down to many a current leaders.
In terms of Saints we can start with Sant Thukaram to Shirdi SaiBaba of Nashik.
In cricket the list never ends with Sachin Tendulkar.

In a different note, I'm not defending Balasaheb, but look at this logic.
You can pack only a certain amount of match sticks in a match box. Once you try to stuff more the match box breaks.
The same way Mumbai has been an land of opportunity to anybody from anypart of India. What is happening is that the city is not able to keep up with inflow of new immigrants. That is pace of expansion of the infrastructure is not able to keep up with the new immigrants. In the end everybody suffers. Eventhough the Western Railway contributes to the most in the Indian Railways, it does not get back most of it for its modernization as it has to subsidize UP and Bihar. Also when the local marathis find that the new immigrants comes and takes up his job(s) in the name of survival at much lower income and undercutting him of his survival. How will the people react to this act, by handing out roses and doing Gandhigiri?.
Does it sound familiar ?. It is happening in Australia, UK and already the murmurs have started in Canada.
When a new immigrant comes in and takes your job and surpasses you many will not take a liking to it.
This is what is happening in Maharasthra. The businesses are owned by Gujaratis, the businesses are managed/run by south Indians also called Madrasis , while he was surviving on the lower end jobs which are stolen by UP bhaiya and Bihari Dada where will the local Manoos go?.
Let us see a current scenario in Canada.
How will you feel when your son/daughter went to University in Canada and obtained a B.S in Computer Science from Waterloo after spending about 60K in OSAP loan and when she is up for a job in Yahoo and she finds that an Indian kid educated in India has taken her job away at 50% of her salary offer.
With the Canadian government offering immigrant visas to all Masters Degree holders from abroad to entice foreign immigrants, you will find that eventhough your kid has all the Canadian experience, education and upbringing is being undercut based on CTC(Cost to the Company).
How will you react ?.
A. Bashing up or murdering the new immigrant ?.
OR
B. Protesting their entry and asking them to learn the local language and asking the government to reserve jobs for the locals in the local government.
If your answer is A then you are with the Australians.
If your anwer is B then you are like Shiv Sena.
What is Obamanation doing currently ?: Anti-outsourcing, Higher Import taxes on imports, Toyota-Honda bashing and many such acts. Why so ?.

Oh, My Dear! You forgot to add the following to your B. Point:
"And beating up the outsiders red and blue, taking law in your own hands."
So both your Point A. and B. are the same and preach undemocratic/violent means to oppose. No difference between Aussies and SS/MNS goons. However ethical, moralistic the issue is - violence can and should never be justified.
In general and a common term they are known as 'Anti-social elements'.
