Hi All,

I want to take IncomeTax preparation course, but I don't know from where? I also want to know how to select a good school/course. I live in Scarborough and prefered weekend and evening courses.
Thanks!

Hey Gappi,

There are many colleges who teach tax prep courses as continuing education and few tax firms who do personal/business tax filing.

Call them or refer their sites.

This depends on long term goal. If you want to set up your own consultancy like preparing tax for relatives and neighbors than try H & R and Softron. If you want to pursue some designation than stay away from them. Try George Brown if you want to learn some serious tax stuff. Professor at GB is CGA. I have attended his training at ACCES Employment in 2010. I find his training much more useful and relevant than H&R

If you want week-end and/or evening classes than join H & R Block. https://www.strategicprofitsinc.com/hosted/hrblock/tax_school/index.php You can enroll for H & R Block Training Courses. It cost very less (Approx $ 375) but it has its own limitation. If you know someone at H&R than you might be able to register for less $200. They also offer job after completion of course.

Pros:
1. Cost less
2. Job opportunity with them. Once employed can pursue advanced course with them.
3.Good Software

Cons:
1. Very basic course. You just need their study material !
2. If you don’t get job than it’s a time waste
3. Poor training and classroom facilities

Job chances depends on

1. Scores on test (Theory + Practical). Their exam is very simple and open book. If someone does not score more than 90% in their exam, please re-evaluate your decision for taxation.
2. Your availability during week days. Give them maximum availability during week days. They normally give week end jobs to senior staff working with them. I did not got the job with them due to full time job and non unavailability during weekdays. This is most important factor in getting the job.
3. During the interview just tell them that you are interested in working with the leader and you want to take your career to next level in taxation with the help of H & R. Don’t tell that you want to start your tax consultancy.

Also get information on Softron http://www.softrontax.com/index.htm. I have heard that this company is owned by Indian and one of the promoter was Indian CA

You may want to hire a Professional Tax Preparer if you can afford it. Using a professional can result in thousands of dollars in tax savings and the reassurance that your return should be filed correctly.

Excellent post, seenimesh.

Further to your comment, I believe only those people who get 80% or more in the course will get a chance at a job, pending an interview of course.
