Some answers to wallE's comments on Anti Surrey
Anti Surrey
- Crime/ appearance of crime (my car was broken into already)
No Crime in South Surrey, Cloverdale, Fleetwood. Just be vigilant around Newton and Whalley areas. By the way Surrey area is huge...
- Weird looking characters (druggies) hanging around .. especially whalley area
As above
- Costlier homes -> longer commute (1h 10mins one way)
Please do your simple math proper, where will you be in 10 years if you buy a house in Surrey or the GTA areas. Most of your mortgage in Surrey will be paid by your tenants. House prices have been rocketing upwards for the last 13 years. Where will you be in 10 years, ask yourself.
- Some really weird desi homes (pink carpets, lions on staircase entrances, mega mega large chandeliers ... like 80s bollywood films)
Sure, agreed in some areas only. Surrey is huge. Please pass by Panorama, South Surrey, Cloverdale. Please drive around.
- Higher costs -> grocery, insurance (car/home) etc.
Ask the same question, owning a home in Surrey multiplies much faster. Not a Townhouse but a Single Family Dwelling with a secondary suite. These costs will just fade away.
- Bad street lighting (can't see a thing at night .. I hate this .. they are so dim)
Better than most countries. You will get used to it, Nothing to worry about or see your optician
- Terribly slow/incompetent drivers
You will get used to.
- All roads lined up with cars (basement suite parking)
Again Surrey is huge, not all areas..
- Many desi restaurants .. but not as good as GTA
Sure agreed. Hopeless restaurants here. But very good in Burnaby and Vancouver. Not a big drive. In Surrey try Green Lettuce, Tasty, Masala Dosa on 80 Ave. Aggarwal.
- I miss Hindi .. too much Punjabi on radios/everywhere ( I don't know punjabi)
Try 93.1 FM, mostly hindi. All kinds of community available here. Sonu Nigham coming. Udit Narayan. Pankaj Udhas. Mohit Chauhan. May bollywood music parties going on. New hindi movie every weekend. Guildford and Scott Road.
- And this one may spark some fires, but fewer like-minded professional educated desi people of my age group here .. or I haven't bumped into them yet. I miss talking about technology/current affairs/english movies with social company.
All kinds of community available, dig deep there are groups of well educated and loaded with money hindi speaking indian community, thriving and very strong. The women wear $300 to $1000 outfit each weekend. Changing every weekend. To achieve higher contact you will have to act higher as well.

wall-e: I think house appreciation is comparable to Mississauga/Brampton. Of course if you have tenants it helps pay mortage, but the downside is you have tenants!

wall-e: I know .. I live in Panorama area.

wall-e: I dont agree... appreciation of homes is just as good in GTA.
- Bad street lighting (can't see a thing at night .. I hate this .. they are so dim)
Better than most countries. You will get used to it, Nothing to worry about or see your optician
- wall-e: I am not comparing to other countries. I am comparing to GTA, hence what I say holds true. It is quite bad and makes areas look unsafe.
- Terribly slow/incompetent drivers
You will get used to.
-wall-e: I know I will, you will get used to me too

-wall-e: Most areas. Rare to find one without lined up cars.

- wall-e: Wow never knoew Burnaby/Vancouver would be better than Surrey for Desi restaurants .. will try. Btw I prefer Hakka Masti to Green Lettuce. Mayoori, Hakka Masti, Akash Chaat house are decent .. but still not comparable to GTA. Still on the look out.

wall-e: I think 1200AM has much more hindi/english than punjabi. Anway I can't stand the Capital Tile and stone advert that plays every 15mins on 93.1 FM. It is so loud and gets stuck into the head,so I switch channels every time that advert comes on

wall-e: I am talking about professional educated desi people, not rich, lavish desis as you suggest. I have no interest in people touting their own horns. And I agree I am sure there are plenty in my age group .. just need to find them .
