For Downtown pick Mississauga - there are few pockets you can find reasonable price.
Brampton - Ajax both has traffic problem ... 410 /427 is busy during work hours... same goes for Ajax 401 is damn busy ....
But if you have to make choice between those two then AJAX
schools are better in Ajax
I believe property tax is less in AJAX as well.
do not forget to consider car insurance... I know for sure brampton has much higher rates then toronto - so call up and find out.

I moved to Ajax last year. I work in Downtown Toronto. I researched a lot on all the suburbs and finally went ahead with Ajax. The below are the positive points for Ajax
1. More wide and open, upcoming community, lots of development happening.
2. In terms of distance, Ajax is near to downtown when you drive, it takes approx 40 mins to downtown. On the other hand Brampton is far off.
3. I dont drive to downtown I take the GO train. This is where Ajax beats Brampton hands down. Lakeshore lines are way better than georgetown or milton lines. I have express trains, trains throughout the day. Multilevel parking lots. All of this is absent in other lines. So if you are looking to travel to downtown, Lakeshore is the line to go and prices are way high on Lakeshore West , so lakeshore east is the way to go. Within lakeshore East Ajax is by far the newest community with newer houses. I don't think restaruant /desi population etc matters especially for people travelling to downtown. I meet my friends in downtown/eat in restaurants there. I have friends in Mississauga, I dont mind going to Mississauga or west GTA once a month. Scarborough is very near to Ajax too. I think Ajax is better place than brampton

All the posters are mostly correct in comparisons between Ajax and Brampton.
Although, I am not too sure about schools being better in Ajax. I know some friends who are moving to Markham and Brampton due to "lack of good schools" in Ajax.
Good school is a relative term. Older the school, better the ratings. Ajax is a new and growing township, it will take some time for good school rankings.
