The city council would be voting tomorrow 30-SEP-2015 to decide on UBER and if Mamalotti has his way then UBER will be shut out of Toronto which would be a sad thing to see a cost effective ride service go away just because of a few people.

I have never traveled on UBER but known that is quite cost effective and in being that , may reduce cars on roads as well .

The petition is for UBERX. UBER services cannot reduce cars on road - UBERX can, if allowed and successful.

I believe the city should constitute laws that are fair to all and allows healthy competition without compromising citizen safety.

They should start by simplifying the taxi licensing system so that current taxi drivers are not penalized for following the rules. Most of the current drivers have paid something is the range of 200K~300K to obtain the license in the hopes of working in a regulated industry.

The insurance and safety aspects should be same for City taxi or any private taxi company and the rules strictly implemented - the penalties so severe that the company cannot even imagine risking it.

Finally, the fare structure needs to be de-controlled - be ready to pay through your nose at times of disruption in public transit services.

Uber management has operated in a grey area and selectively says silent on sensitive issues.

Checked the news last night.

John Tory's motion to regulate UBER won 32-21 .. 21 those who did not want any new regulations for UBER.

The final regulations are expected to come this spring and that would determine a somewhat level playing field ..

Meanwhile the base cab fares are reduced by $1.

In the end the customers are going to have better prices as happens with competition ... The big 3 Telcos reduced their prices and brought out new carriers with the advent of Wind and all .

I have never ridden Uber but feel it should stay here in Toronto.

I have been following cab drivers woes over the past couple of years and it appears that the main cab brokers or the middle manning agencies like Beck , Best Choice etc. keep quite a major cut and that may come down ... With UBER this middle manning is all technology controlled and the cut already low.

It is a safe service where all cab drivers / passengers are registered and can be traced back if needed ...

Plus it provides cheaper commute to the users .
