I met someone at the house party and the person does Uber driving 3-4 days a week and makes like $ 3000 cash , Can it be true ? , sounds better than some of full time jobs out there.

If some CD member is already doing , then give some tips to get started ,

I don't know If i should post this topic in life section of forum

thanks

I have spoken with lot of UBER drivers and I have myself looked at the model. I don't know exactly how many hours you are talking about per day when you mean 3-4 days. This is how the dynamics work. In downtown you end up doing 3-4 rides per hour not more than that. Your total revenue is going to be apporximately 40 $ per hour. Out of this UBER is going to take 30% which will give you a gross of 28 $ per hour. Now subtract fuel costs which you can assume to be 3-5 $ per hour depending on traffic. so it comes to 23 $ after subtracting fuel costs. You need to also account for vehile wear and tear which will be 2 $ per hour+ any additional risks. So it will come to 20 $ per hour at a gross level. Now if you already have a good job and this is extra money so for e.g lets say one is making 60-80K.. subtract 35% tax from this 20 $= 13 $ post tax. So if you drive even 2 hrs everyday for 5 days in a week which is 40 hrs a month your post tax income will be 520$. if you work more you can make a little more. Now the entire thing depends on what you are already making etc. I did not find the money worth the risk it involves, damage to the car etc.

Regardless of what the by law says, if you are in a accident and if the insurance company finds out that you were using your car for commercial purposes, they might deny the coverage for you in the future or increase your insurance rates. So all in all I did not find uber worth it.

On the flip side, I use UBER as a rider and I really like it as I get to save some money on short rides. I live in Ajax and work in downtown. If I am going with my wife for friday night dinner and I dont have my car since it is parked at go station, it is quite quick and convenient and costs me little more that what it would cost in TTC (5.6 $ for 2 people 1 way ) vs UBER (8 $) for 3 kms

When people at gatherings say something, it needs to treated as a "facebook material" (you know the kind where everyone's life is perfect as evidenced by their facebook posts).

The devil's in the details. First, anyone can make up a number to impress others. Even if that number was to be true, as vivek901 has spelled out, the net truth ends up being less impressionable than the original.

If anyone is interested in pursuing the venture, as hccheda stated, they need to do a meticulous due diligence and evaluate with their own needs, wants, and interests.

I believe they treat Uber drivers like independent contractors, so drivers are responsible for showing their income and expenses when filing tax returns. Uber deducts their commission (something like 30%) and pay via bank account. So definitely it is not paid in cash.

Its not a bad option if you are on welfare. Make sure you hide the money you make from Uber from Welfare people, otherwise they wiil cut it.
