21 May, Toronto — Residents of Toronto’s West End will hold a press conference on Wednesday, May 21 to launch an online petition following last week’s brutal murder of Holly Jones. Organizer and resident Pat Hood will make a brief statement and answer questions at 10 a.m. at the Boys and Girls Club, 18 Randolph Ave. The petition advocates for more effective laws to treat convicted sex offenders who prey on children, and calls for the creation of “Holly’s Law,” which will enhance the safety of children by ensuring that dangerous offenders are kept off of our streets and are provided with access to treatment.
Holly’s Law would require sexual offenders convicted of crimes against children to undergo a “dangerous offender” evaluation before becoming eligible for release. It would also mandate that treatment — which is not currently available to all convicted sex offenders — be made available to inmates. Holly’s Law organizer Pat Hood explains: “This law will be a legacy for Holly, and will help protect innocent children from dangerous criminals. This is the first step to make sure our streets are safe for our children. We need to focus our anger to make sure this doesn’t happen again.”
Holly Jones, a 10-year-old West End Toronto resident, was brutally murdered last week. Her body was later found on the nearby Toronto lake shore. Police are still searching for suspects, and no arrests have been made.
