as Smiley (correctly) pointed out, there is a very very sharp distinction between maintaining residency for the purpose of canadian permanent resident status while outside canada vs accumilating the 3 year residency obligation for citizenship...
even for maintaining pr status, you need 2 years of PHYSICAL presence in canada, UNLESS you satisfy the exclusion conditions found here...
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomer/res-oblig.html
canadian businesses are defined as...
http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/newcomer/cdnbusiness.html
citizenship act on the other hand REQUIRES physical presence to fulfill residency obligation for grant of citizenship (unless you belong to the distinct list of categories excluded from this requirement)...
http://laws.justice.gc.ca/en/C-29/34298.html#rid-34320
the two are different and not interchangeable...

don't give wrong info and mislead people. You cannot stay in the US and get Canadian citizenship (even if you are working for a Canadian company). You can do that for PR only not for citizenship.
May be you are correct.
But I know lots of friend got canadian citizenship, after styaing in US. They work for canadian compnay and then stay in US, work for US client..but getting paid in canadian $$ on their social security.. they maintain their status in US and canada with paying difference on tax.
so as far as you pay canadian tax, it prove you are in canada.. BTW at that time there was no system..which track you are in US or canada. so this people use to keep friend address, do some transaction on credit card and one cell phone.. bill..etc.. and submit all this to canada goverment when they file citizenship..
and what? they really got citizenship.. without having any problem.. just because they have paid 3 years income tax..
but now if they are going to track between us and canada flow.. may not be possible..however i knew they got before sept. 11 when everything was easy..
I had that option for me, as I am also in IT and found same diference in money, but as oursoucing gown so much.. decided that .. don't want to take chance in US ..if I want citizenship.. have to stay here.. to statisfy requriement for citizenship.... oh ya, you can make too..in canada. as well as you can get good position..in mangement.. in US you are always consultant on h1 or l1..i consider as an labour...not in management good postion..
but once you are immigrant to canada .. you are free to work for any company.. you can do your own consulting business..lots of contract in j2ee.. can pay you same as US job..with 20% tax only on your corporation.
I consider .. money making..is upto person capablitity.. marketing skills ...techical skills..etc.. how much inteligent as well to make corporation and search contract and pay only 20% tax.. etc.
If you have guts.. you can make money anywhere... so why don't first take passport which can give you advantage to visit most of the country without any visa..as well as you can work in US..etc.
What is the advantage of having Canadian citizenship over Canadian PR? Will it be a different scenario if Canadian citizen works on H1b visa in US? What will happen if a Canadian citizen looses his/her H1b status? They will have any special privilege than a Canadian P.R holder?

How do they keep track of the Incoming and Outgoing from Canada, I have entered canada by Car several times and when i come out of the border i only meet the US officials , they just see your PP and let you through, so essentially i am still in Canada as per Canadian records, does this counts as ur time in Canada?
